Title: Forum Monikers/Handles/Names
Post by: Doug Rose on February 08, 2010, 12:48:55 PM
All...I have been a member of the forum for almost two months and enjoy it immensely. I have been on the ATCA and TCI lists and this is head and tails above them. BUT....I have one thing that bothers me. I really don't feel like I know you. Most everyone signs their posts with their moniker or doesn't sign at all.  Is there a reason for it?  When I started, I signed off as"kidphone" but began to feel foolish and stopped. I'm Doug, not kidphone. Kidphone was my eBay handle for a long time. Even at Flea Markets, people who knew me by sight, called me the "phoneguy" or "phonedude" etc, never kidphone. After the relationship with them developed, I was just Doug. Hasn't the relationship developed? This is is no way a criticism and please do not take it as such. Just wondering why, if your name is Alexander, why you'd sign your name phoneinventor...Just my two cents....Doug

Hi My name is Dan and I'm a phone Junky...
In my case we have more than one active Dan, and a couple times we got our answers crossed in posts. So I started using D/P, for my login name of Dan/Panther, which is a nickname I've had for  years because of a Panther tattoo on my right forearm. It has turned into a tradition of sorts, My two older daughters have the same tattoo, my two stepdaughters have gotten the same tattoo, my son has it, as well as my ex wife.

Hi Doug:

I agree with you 100%. And I wish the ATCA and TCI clubs would modernize their "listserv" (I think the name is from the Unix days) and use some version of forum software where you can post pictures with a very decent resolution. Many of their problems with Off Topic problems would go away, well, because there are areas in this forum dedicated for Off Topic subjects. If you don't like Off Topic subjects, don't open that area of the forum. As simple as an On/Off switch.

I think people use pseudo names to protect their identities, just like cars have license plates. But after I while, and it happens around where I live, I know who is the owner of a particular car. Sometimes you will see post where in the introduction a message is addressed to a particular fellow forum member by their first name. To that I say give yourself another month or two and you will know who is who.

I don't mind signing my name in my posts because I always say to myself "Would you be happy to see your comments on the 10PM evening news show?"

That's my editorial comment of the day. Now back to work.  ;D ;D ;D

I just came up with one of the top of my head that I could remember easily, after a while most post their given names, like me.

Interesting topic, Doug.  I have always used my name because I probably won't forget it. :)  Really, my eBay name is my name (but I messed up and used all lower case)....dennismarkham.  I used to sell a few phones on eBay and part of my schtick (yes there is some schtick involved) was that I don't "hide behind some made up name".  Nothing against most of the rest of the world that uses a "handle" on eBay.  And I understand for privacy reasons why some people would rather not use their real name.

Maybe it goes back to the CB radio days when people had handles.  Maybe it's just because people like the anonymity of the internet, which is OK for some things.  But this forum, or others reaches a smaller group with similar interests.  I also think for some their identity is some embedded within their "handle", or a life-long nickname.  I think it's OK to have a Handle but it would be nice then to have a name at the bottom so we remember how to address someone.

Like Jorge said, I'll often reply to Bingster by saying Darrin and then completing my reply.  But I also like Jorge's comment about seeing my comments on the 10 o'clock news.

DP it's been good like you said, when I see DP I know it's you and not Dan. :)  So for that reason it's a good thing to have a handle.  But it would be nice if everyone put their real name at the bottom, like most people do.

I've noticed that a lot of the users have part of,  or all of their name in their e-mail address listed in the profile page. I don't think anyone is trying to hide----except the occasional spammer.

There's my 2c worth.

If you are stealing my identity, the joke is on you.

I've been using my username since I first logged onto the internet in the late 1990s.  It seems a silly username now, but I'm so used to it that I keep using it for everything.  I don't have any problems with using my real name, though, and most folks know my name by now (especially if they've exchanged PMs with me).  For some reason I always sign PMs with my name, but rarely posts to the open forum. Probably just because I'm too lazy to do it for that many posts.  Maybe I'll put it in my signature or something.

I like the idea of using real names too.  When I first started this forum in May, I decided to go along with the crowd and come up with a name, as dumb as it is.  After a while, I began signing all my posts with my real name.

I'd agree with Dennis that the handle thing online is the direct descendant of the CB radio era.  I've been doing online stuff since the 80's and we pretty much just adopted the whole have a handle thing, and I've been McHeath online ever since.  (a pun on my first and last names)

Doesn't bother me if people use their real name, like Dennis, or a handle like so many others.  My family has always been huge on nicknames anyway, and nobody at home calls me "Heath" much anyhow.  I had an uncle we called "Spy" all his life, another uncle called "Nick", along with aunt "Goldie", uncle "Rex", aunt "Fannie" and so on. (none of these were their real names, and I'm not sure what Goldies real name was)   My dad went by "Jr".  (He was not a Jr as he was not named after his dad, but I never heard anyone call him Hubert, at least not in his hearing :))  Even dad's awards and papers from work were tagged for "Jr".

And at work they all call me "John", even says so on the ID card I wear.  If the phone rings and they want to talk to "John" it's from work, or if they want "Mac" it's family, and if they want "Heath" then they don't know me very well.

So nicknames are just a normal deal for me, and the forum's handles have always seemed just like another use of them.  I, personally, like nicknames as they are rather friendly, seeming to give some insight into a person.  But others mileage may vary.

You can call me Dan or Doc or whatever.

Donna, while I am thinking of you, what's the story behind your name "bwanna?''

My name is Joshua D. Fitzgerald. I go by foots 'cause that the nickname the guys at work gave me, its sort of a play on Fitz. Anyhow, if you ever been around this part of Louisiana you'd quickly find out that  everybody gets at least one nickname. There's people I've known almost my whole life and only knew them by their nickname. I have had friends such as Gristle, Lurch, Possum Grits, Turkey Wing Thomas, Keebler, Swivel, Couyon, T-neg, and Grand Tete to name a few.

well this is fun! getting behind the nicknames. i was always most curious about "foots".

i have been known as "bwanna" for more than 20yrs. i used to take care of my friends little guy while she worked. he loved the "name game" song. you know the one where you put different letters at the beginning of someone's name. well he thot bwanna was hilarious & called me that all the time. everybody else picked it up from there.

d/p, i believe you are right. so, in that respect the name is fitting, too, as i am very bossy.

i do sign my real name at the bottom of my posts.

Foots story of his nickname and his friends use of nicknames is pretty much how my family has worked as well.  Even though we are in California, not exactly known for it's use of nicknames, my families strong southern US roots show a lot of the time, and names are one of them.  Most of my family is in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Mississippi.  My uncle Sammy in Vicksburg, an elderly man, has perhaps the worlds most fascinating accent.  (Sammy's not his real name, and I'm not sure what his real name is come to think of it)

McHeath;
Up in the Northern part of Cal, nicknames are not real common, I agree, but down South, The gangs use Nicknames very regularly, in fact like Foots says, many people you know by their nickname and don't know their real name.
I have several acquaintances in Mexican gangs, and my Street Nickname is Wizard or Wiz, because I always come up with these techy sort of gadgets.

Hi, I'm Tom D. Nakielski, Jr.  Many of you already know that :)  I just used a handle because most people do.  I have 2 I use online. This one and Captain Pabst (I'm an avid Pabst Collector as well) And on one site I use Caprice Estate (My prized old station wagon)

I have a lot of nicknames.  My friends often call me "sixties" for my style and old-fashioned ways.

At work they call me the gentle giant, Johnny Cash, Conway, Rhinestone Cowboy and Tommy Boy.

They're also big on Nicknames in my family. I'm simply "Junior", my grandpa's Diamond Mike (he is the originator of bling), my uncle Mike is Mix (friend with a speech impediment) Um, there's Crash, Red Dawg, Carcass and I'm sure I'm missing some.  But I digress.........You can call me anything you want, just don't call me late for dinner!

Hi I am Dag Ståle Karlsen and use dsk.

A loooong foreign name, obviously hard to pronounce for many :)

Feels it more or less frightening enough with my not so good English, if you shouldn't have an impossible name to deal with too.

It is even possible to translate: Dag= day, Ståle = Steel, and Karlsen= son of Charles (Charlesson???)

dsk is quick and easy, and I'll guess it gives me a kind of identity too??

I have much more problem with seeing people on different forums with different id's.

The username dsk was not free, so I got d_s_k

Cool name Dag. I have often wondered how to pronounce that "a" with the little circle above it.

We have 3 special letters added on your alphabet: Æ Ø Å  (æ ø å) written as AE OE or AA when used where the ÆØÅ's not available.
We use to pronounce all the letter sightly different from you, and e.g. I will almost always be as the i in "him" The u will be as in you  The O as o in zoo, then the Å will be almost as o in show, but it may be a looong sound  as in "looong" :)  The Æ would be quite near the a in have or bad.  (if I didn't know, I could have spelled have: hæv, and how håv. (v and w sounds equal, so we don't use w much) The Ø is written as Ö in some other countries, and are pronounced near the u in suddenly, or the u in sudden. W, q and z is not used in words with Norwegian orgin.

I used my real name:  Jeremy Livingston

But in other venues I keep different "identities".  Not that I mean to decieve anyone, but that I like to keep things seperate.  I don't like people I play computer games with looking me up on facebook.  I've always had different nicknames starting back when I was in the Navy.  Livingston was quickly shortened to "Stone", and then is just became "Rock", which then became "J-Rock".  I was called J-Rock for the longest by almost everyone.  But the navy days are past and here I am just Jeremy again.     ;D

My handle is my old employee ID from work.  It was probably a dumb thing to use, but now that I don't work for AT&T anymore, it makes no difference.  Donna/bwanna knows what I'm talking about, and probably thinks I was crazy to use my company ID anywhere but the workplace.  I just found it easier than to come up with something else.  I was using "rp2813" all day long at work, so why make myself remember a different one?

I'll try to sign my posts with "Ralph" going forward.  It's been hit and miss with me, I know.

Ralph, if you click Profile at the top of the screen and under Modify Profile at the left, click Forum Profile Information and scroll down to Signature, you can put your name there and it will appear at the bottom of each post. Some have done that, including me. It's a lot easier than remembering to sign your name.

My handle is my username at work and like you, I type it over and over each day and it's just second nature to me.

Like Jonathan, Jorge, and a few others here, I have my first name posted in the signature section of my profile page, so it always appears at the bottom of my posts.  My user name is actually my last name, and has a nostalgic connection to phone collecting for me.  About five years after I "got hooked", I happened to meet a couple retired telephone co. workers that took me under their wing & we'd often run around together on the weekends scouring flea markets & antique malls hunting old phones.  They started calling me by my last name, as was their habit at work.  It's stuck with me, & I still use it the way they did.  Also, it's a little unique, and not easily forgotten.

How about letting us know who you are and telling us something about yourself?? My Moniker is Kidphone, my name is Doug. I have been collecting telephones for over thirty years. Good idea Doug to bring this up. It's interesting to see what everyone has to say.  Let's hear from those that have joined on in the past year.

OK, I'll take the bait.

I am Bill Geurts.  I don't even remotely work in the telecommunications industry, and never did.  I am an accountant in a commercial bank (gasp), and I have been an accountant for 40 years.  I did, however spend 6 years in the Air National Guard as an HF radio technician, and I have held a ham radio license for about 45 years.  I started with phones as a teen-ager when my neighbor and I strung a wire between the houses and ran our own "phone company"

On and off over the years, I have gone in and out of the collecting, but now the bug has really bitten.  It is so easy to get information now with the Internet, and so easy to get obscure items on e-Bay and other sources.  There is no comparison to the days gone by.

I joined this forum in May of 2009 when someone posted a derrogatory post in either the ATCA or TCI listserve about this fledgling forum.  They were knocking the fact that someone had posted one of the very common questions about "Why won't my phone ring?" and it took about 20 posts back and forth for someone to tell him why.  I figured it was an opportunity to share what knowledge I have, and to be honest it works both ways.  I have learned a GREAT deal here.

One thing I like about this forum is that there are no dumb questions.  Having not worked in the industry, there have been many times where I have offered an answer or solution, only to be corrected because what I was saying was wrong,  I appreciate corrections, because if nobody corrects me, I don't learn.

I have horrible skills at working with plastics and some of the detail work involved in detailing a phone.  I have done it, but that is not where my main interest lies.  I am more on the functionality and wiring, since electronics is my first love, even though I am now a relic as to my skill levels there.

I simply used my forename and the initial of my surname - hence Tom Buggie. Not a common surname in the UK, though it's been around in England since some nutjob ancestor came over the English Channel with William the Conqueror in 1066, and took part in a bit of a scrap at Senlac, Hastings.  ;)
I work in local government as a Leisure Services Facilities Manager, which means I look after all buildings and hard landscaping in our parks and open spaces. I also manage 3 cemeteries and all the fun stuff associated with these areas.
I recently started collecting phones, mainly Western Electric 500's (9) a 302 and 2 5302's, though I have a SC 1543 and a 1970 SC 500 Cherry red. I'm going to start with a few GPO 706 phones if I can manage to pick them up cheap enough.
My eBay handle is getsumeigreen - I used to have a Karate club which was called Getsumei - no - michi Ryu and my fave colour is green - easy enough?

As far as choosing a name for the forum I thought really long and hard on it, I used a chart of the stars in relation to my astrological birthday and applied an algebraic formula X=Y2(c3_h2)P. I used the computer to run this formula and it took a few hours so I gave up and just went with my name ;D

I hadn't seen this thread until Doug Rose (AKA Kidphone) started posting to it again.

I use my Handle "AE_Collector" for quite a few different things and of course it is "AE_Collector" because my main focus in phone collecting is AE Phones and equipment. I work for the Telco in the Vancouver area British Columbia Canada and have been doing so for over 35 years now. We were owned 50.1% by GTE so BC Telephone used mainly AE equipment which is why AE has always been my favorite phones. BC Telephone became Telus in 1999 so just like the name "Automatic Electric", the "British Columbia Telephone Company" now no longer exists.

I am Terry Biddlecombe, of English descent but NOT the english Jockey of the same name. When travelling through Yorkshire England once, wanting to try the real thing, Yorkshire pudding at a nice restaraunt there, I was informed of a more than 1 hour wait to get a table and reluctantly decided it would be worth the wait so I gave my name. In no time at all my wife and I were whisked in to a nice table. It was sometime later before it occured to me what had happened. In hind site, I'm sure they must have been disappointed with their tip.

I like this topic so I must add to it.

I'm Dan (one of the many on here, it would seem).  I  became interested in phones from my love and appreciation of old television shows.  (It should be noted that I am just 32.)  I loved shows such as Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, and The Munsters (three of my favorites), and all of these series had candlestick phones in them.  (Basically, my fascination with candlestick phones started my phone "connection.")  Also, as a child, we grew up with WE 554 (and my mom still has the paperwork from Bell of PA when she purchased two 554 phones, including the stickers that stated such...although she never put them on the phones.)  It wasn't until I was a freshman in high school that we had even switched to touch-tone as the main phone in our house.  By the late 1990s, I began to think about the rotary phones that we no longer used, and I missed them.

I purchased my first phone from Phoneco around 1998 (an AE dial candlestick, to be exact), and after discovering a little thing called eBay, the rest was history.

My "stopthemachine" moniker comes from when I worked at the kitchen of a retirement home (which I did for 13 years--from my senior year of high school and three college degrees...).  There was a dish machine (industrial-sized, dish washer on a conveyor belt-type device), and if someone didn't take the racks out and put the items away from the back of the dish machine, it would get backed up and...basically, the racks at the end of the dishmachine would fly up into the air as would whatever was in them--dishes, cups, etc. would break and create a big mess.  Before this would happen, you would hear the classic, "STOP THE MACHINE!!!"--so that someone would turn the machine off.  If not, chaos would ensue.  I began to use this for email purposes too.  It's funny because everyone always thinks it is a reference to the band "Rage Against the Machine," but it's not.  While I worked there, I took classes and also worked as a substitute teacher, so I was certainly busy those days.

Currently, I'm a substitute teacher, but I have had interim and long-term assignments teaching English in 8th, 9th, and probably again for 10th grade in about a week or so (maternity-leave teacher).  It's a tough job, but I love it.  One day soon, I hope to get a contract, but until then, I'm taking classes for additional certifications (reading specialist and special education).

I do have a shortcoming to phones though.  I wish someone would write a book called "Telephone Repair for Dummies" because as knowledgeable about phones as I like to think I am, I am not the most technical person when it comes to doing medium or major phone repairs.  I can just do very basic stuff.  (Hey, I'll admit it, but I would like to learn, just the same.)  I can usually spot, though, when a phone is missing internal parts and such though.

I have not narrowed down an area of telephony where I feel I need to focus.  Although many people are strict Western Electric collectors, others collect primarily Automatic Electric phones, etc., I can say that I enjoy all the niceties that each company provided to phone fans.  With that being said though, I am quite proud of my Stromberg-Carlson collection.  I picked up many of my 1543 series more than five years ago, and I am still looking for two colors (brown and light gray) of the desk set.  (Many have the early bakelite handsets too!)  I also love my candlesticks:  I can honestly say that I have each brand's dial candlesticks: SC (three of them), AE (two), WE (two), Kellogg (one).  (Side note: did any other American company make dial candlesticks?  I've been meaning to ask the experts about that.)

I am always happy to chat phones so say hi anytime--private message, AIM, and so forth.  Sorry for the novel, but I figured if I were going to do this, I would do it right.  Haha.  I have greatly enjoyed this board since first finding it.  Everyone's ideas and suggestions have been quite useful.

Terry

I guess Terry introduced himself, so I guess I should. Terry has been a great help to my collection over the years and is a man with an incredible amount of Knowledge about AE and phones in general and has always been kind and generous to me.

My name is Dave Hunter, am nearing retirement with Canada Post, and for the past decade have been running the Telephone Museum of Prince Edward Island on the opposite coast of Canada..

But way back to the beginning. I grew up in Brockville, Ontario - the home of Automatic Electric in Canada. I grew up to know both the old Phillips Electrical Works plant, and the GTE-Automatic Plant on Strowger Blvd. which replaced it in 1953. Growing up there began a lifelong interest in phones, as close to 1/4 of the families in Brockville had at least one of their members working at the plant.

http://www.islandregister.com/phones/ae.html

I have been picking up the odd phone since I was young, and some years ago, when my parents moved out of their house in front of mine into a nursing home, we moved into their bigger house. I had phones in all the buildings over the property, and had always wanted to share them with others, so began the museum in the house we had moved out of.

Visitors are always welcome April to November, (even longer in a mild year), and there is never a charge for admission. I do however, require them to contact me first so we can arrange a suitable time and day for their visit, as I still work.

Terry convinced me to join the forum. We live on opposite sides of Canada, and though we have never met face to face, I would like to think we have become good friends over the years!

I always sign my posts with my first name which is Remco, a very old Dutch name. My last name is Enthoven which is derived from the Dutch town Eindhoven.

My handle teka-bb is an abbreviation, used by Dutch PTT, to describe a certain PABX.
It was partly derived from German; teka stands for Telefon Klein Automat.

I used my real initials, this time. Why didn't I spell my name out? I reckon cause I just like to be a bit private until I feel as though I haven't a need to.
Some of you already know my Christian name by my choice weather you wanted to or not but, it was MY choice.
That and I'm a fugitive in 39 states. But don't bother turning me in, you couldn't buy a pack of Camels with the reward money.

I decided to go with my real first name, and first letter of my last name - for privacy on a public board.

Actually, we were so poor when I was a kid, my folks couldn't afford a last name.  All we could afford was an initial.  It wasn't until about twenty years later that we could finally afford to get a last name, and a used one at that...  :D

But seriously, speaking of names, does anyone recall this character...

I suppose I never properly introduced myself as well.

I'm Dave Haber.  I was born in Brooklyn, New York, and my family moved to the suburbs on Long Island, to the little incorporated village of Massapequa Park, when I was a baby.

I was always interested in phones, in high school, I conned a telephone installer into giving me a 2500 off his truck telling him it was for a school project.  Later in high school, my best friend acquired a 1A2 key system with some rotary Call Directors from an abandoned building, which we went on to document and install with no manuals, simply from observing its previous installation.  Out of high school in the early seventies, I got a job with my first telephone interconnect company, installing business key systems.  I gradually worked up to installing small PBXs, and then went to field repair of all these systems.  I moved to Los Angeles in 1979 and continued working with telephone interconnect companies.  Over the years my career has transitioned from phones into computers, and I am now a Web Designer and Web Programmer.

I only started collecting a few years ago. In September, 2009, I discovered this web site:

https://www.ckts.info/

For many, many years, I had been lusting after having a PBX, like a Panasonic or a small Mitel in my home, but I never could justify the expense or figure out where to physically put it.  But finding out about Asterisk, I was hooked!  A real PBX FOR FREE, using an old computer I already had in the back of the closet!  By the end of that month, I was connected with the C*NET.  By the beginning of December, 2009, I took the plunge all the way and disconnected my POTS line from Pacific Bell (or whatever the heck they call themselves these days), having added the capability of getting incoming and outgoing calls to the PSTN using a SIP DID service.  Seeing as how the Asterisk PBX was now "my phone company", I felt it needed a name.  So I named it after my old hometown, and Massapequa Telephone was born.

http://www.massapequatelephone.com/

Hence, as you've probably figured out by now, my handle is masstel.  My goal in setting up my PBX, besides being able to connect to the C*NET, was also so that I could use phones that I remember from the period when I was "in the biz".  I now have a nice collection of Western Electric phones from the 60's and 70's which I actually use, taking them occasionally "out of stock" and switching around the different sets I have installed around my place.

I can't remember exactly when I started using deedubya3800. It's been my eBay username for many years now, but I don't really remember if that was the first place I used it or if I used it somewhere else first.

D. W. Adams is my name, so it's not entirely improper to call me deedubya. That's how I pronounce it, anyway! :D And the 3800 part comes from my Buick fandom. They managed to take the worst idea ever conceived and relentlessly refined it into one of the finest powerplants ever built. It only took them 33 years to get all the bugs worked out, but once they did, it was one of GM's top engines for the next 21!

That strange letter å (Å) is a Scandinavian letter for a sound quit near the o in HOW.
How shall it be pronounced etc.  so just call me dsk. May be not as important, just as easy as JFK ;D

In this day & age where identity theft is rampant, and private snoophauses aggregate data to sell to others for unpleasant uses against the will of the people whose data are being collected, it's legit for people to go by userIDs that have little or nothing to do with their names.  Everything we say here is publicly readable by anyone regardless of whether they are signed in or not.  Including by spammers, snoophauses, identity thieves, and others.

One thing that strikes me as (sorry but there is no way to say this diplomatically) really really dangerous, is when people go posting their birth dates casually.  "Hey I just found a phone with my birth date on it!..."   Hey, someone you don't know just found your credit card, bank account, etc. etc.!

Ask ANYONE involved in communications/information security about that and they'll chew you out in language that makes mine seem mild.   That is a guaranteed way to get digitally darwinized.   Legal name + date of birth = consider yourself lucky if you don't get pwned.

Formal suggestion to whoever owns & operates this board:  Set up a "vetted members only" section for that stuff, that is locked behind vetted userID + password, and has a warning at the top saying "danger, you might still get pwned if you post your birth date here!"  Move all the "birthday" topics to that section, and enable people to delete their birthday-revealing comments from other topics they may have posted them in.  Seriously.   Sooner or later someone here is going to get their identity stolen if these steps aren't taken.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but again, ask anyone in information security and you'll hear the same warnings or something very close.

This is going to be simple.  My user name is my name.  I guess you already figured that out.   I could not think of a phone related moniker while registering.

My background is over 3 decades in telecom.  I have always been interested in old phones ever since some"fell" off my installers truck years ago. In the last 10 years my interest in telephone collecting has increased at the same time my astronomy interest waned.   Now my problem is the amount of space my phones require. There is always a struggle in in my house between my wife's Basset Hound collection (over 2000 items) and my phones.  I think the bassets are winning due to sheer numbers.

I did make some headway at this weekend's phone show,  picked up seven more phones!

GG make some points about protection,  but as long I don't give out my SS# I feel rather safe.  I do have other personal finance protections in place to allow my freedom to share my name.

My avatar is my Basset Hound Howie; one of our 3 bassets.  He is wearing my switchboard headset. He was NOT too cooperative and it took many shots to get the photo.

"Handles" have been part of online community forums since the days of XT's, 2400 baud modems, and Bulletin Boards, probably longer, but that was the level of technology when I first got online.  It's just carried over.  I use this handle for most boards.  It has an aquatic theme to it because I used to be an avid scuba diver.

Actual names are more personal and some aren't comfortable giving them out right at first.

Great thread, glad its been revived.

Well, my real name is Mark Furze - pronounced Firs. Not Furtsa or Fursay. Some people think that's of German origin, if you know German you'll get a giggle out of it (ask me if you want to know!). But its actually Westcountry English, another name for a yellow-flowered spiky bush of the pea family that's commonly called gorse. As for my handle, well, I was signing up to the forum here and scanned around the room for inspiration and set eyes on a bright red British Telecom touch tone 9802AR Tribune phone on my desk. Ironic to name my self after a touch tone unit on a rotary phone forum I know, but it caries a certain Roman dignity. Perhaps I should have used my old school nick-name "Fuzz"

In real life I'm a university professor, teaching and researching geomorphology - the science of landscapes - how rivers and glaciers etc act to sculpt the land and how we can use landforms and sediments to reconstruct the Earth's history. Spend most of my summers up north on fieldwork doing research in the Canadian Arctic. Originally I'm from Cornwall in the UK, but moved to Canada about 7 years ago where I developed my two interests of 4x4 exploration and phone collecting, to go along with my love for the outdoors. Only been phone collecting for about 2 years with only 30 or so units. Mainly interested in Northern Electric Uniphones, black plastic 1950s-1980s desk sets from around the world, and hazardous area phones. Guess I should post some pics of the collection when I get round to it!

Cheers

Heh;

Terry, it's a long story, but I will shorten it :)

Back in 1994, when I was at home with the flu, I was about to sign-up for on-line gaming playing QUAKE, and I needed a "handle". Well, as I coughed and hacked, I reached for.........a Kleenex tissue and it was plain-as-day! Except they had always been "Kleenax" to me, not Kleenex, so I chose my "Kleenax" moniker, and have it to this day.

Trust me; if you see "Kleenax" ANYWHERE, it is most likely me!  After selecting Kleenax as my handle back in 1994, I have used it on everything that I do on-line, and have NEVER had to see, "sorry, that handle has already been taken; please choose another".

Now you know the rest-of-the-story!

Why is it that there about 2 people on this forum that use their real names? It makes it a little more personal when you know who you are talking to, and it seems just a little more respectable in my opinion. I've got nothing to hide, that's why I post my real name.

Probably a few more than two using real names or at least some of their real name. I recall kidphone saying the same thing and then changing his forum name to Doug Rose.

I spend a bit of time asking myself "who again is he really" and I wonder who he really is. This forum is dedicated to letting everyone be who they want to be as long as they are playing nice so I think everyone is okay with it. My name is too long to remember and too hard to spell!

That's my thoughts on the topic,

I completely agree with Ray, but at the same time I see the other side of things too.  I don't hesitate to use my name.  I don't think I've signed anything with my last name(until now), but it's really not that hard to figure out.  Among 99% of people I've met in this hobby, I don't want to remain anonymous.  You're all great people, and I want to know who you are, and I want you to know the same about me.  I'm all the time talking to my dad about "The guys on the phone forum".  I guess it seems like a family type atmosphere here is what I'm trying to say.  It's a great community and I'm very proud to be a part of it.

Then the other side is the casual people that sign up to ask questions or such, they don't see it the same way and want to remain anonymous.  I'd feel the same way if I had to sign up for a car forum or something just to ask a question.

I guess that's an overly complicated way of just saying "I agree".

Nice to see why some people use their online name rather than real one. For me, it is a bit half and half. Cautious about people seeing my full name, but it isn't any secret, I use DavePEI. The reason for that, is I don't see my collection as being mine, but the museum collection, and I want people to associate it with the museum and the Island, and not only with me. The museum is in my consideration every time I make an addition, and I try to keep items I add as varied as possible. So, for me, the DavePEI is a combination of both if that makes any sense. To me, I want to see the collection long outlast me, and the plan is for my son to continue it when I am gone. I am the only one on PEI trying to preserve our telecommunications history, which makes it even more important. It is a real stretch to continue paying for repairs, insurance and taxes for both our home, and for the museum building, and to keep adding, but well worth it.

When I first started with eBay I couldn't think of any fancy name and decided to just use my name.  For a long time it was simply (one word) dennismarkham.  Because of that when I started to sell a few phones on eBay a fellow collector, Bob Loeser recognized my name and we reacquainted after many years.  We had worked together when I was still in high school.  But I always just figured I didn't have anything to hide (not that people that don't use their real names do).  So when joining the Forum it made sense to just use my name.  I have since switched my eBay name to VintageRotaryPhones----and I still have nothing to hide. :)

I spoke of it on another thread, so I guess I got waylaid without explaining my username.  It is the main highway that passes near my home, south of Atlanta.  It is a portion of the Dixie Highway that ran from the northern states to Florida.  It has been disintegrated by the interstate highway system which was started the year I was born, 1956.

I got my handle partly because of WesternElectricBen's username that I found when I was scrolling through the forum before I became a member. Only until recently, I had the longest username on the 9000 registered members here!!!

Doug,

If you don't mind, I may occasionally send you recordings of some of my creations, and recreations, as well.

Please, bear in mind, I didn't start playing Blues guitar until 1967, so I only have a 'Learner's Permit.' ;)

Hi all,

Thought I'd put in my 2 cents worth:

I also usually like a measure of anonymity when on the Web.  I generally choose a "handle" which describes an aspect of my personality as far as my hobbies are concerned.  I chose "KaiserFrazer67" because those are the kind of cars I like best, having grown up with them and actually owning one (the '54 Kaiser Manhattan in the first picture below).  The "67" refers to my birth year, 1967.  Other usernames I have are "MartinFeather" which is a little more cryptic, and has nothing whatsoever to do with birds...  it describes my 1950 Feather Craft 12-foot aluminum runabout with a 1953 Martin "200" 20-horse outboard on the back (next picture, behind the Kaiser); and "RuppRider73" because I also have an interest in vintage snowmobiles, and had a beautiful 1973 Rupp Nitro 440 for about ten years (last picture).

I usually don't disclose my name or location, but since many of the other members seem to be okay with disclosing more info about themselves, I felt safe enough to do so myself, at least on this forum.  You all seem like a pretty decent bunch of folks, and for that I'm pretty thankful.  That's pretty rare on the Web these days.

Pleased to meet you, 19and41!  I live near the same 41 up here in Wisconsin, although it is now Interstate 41 from the Illinois state line to Green Bay.  North of Green Bay it is still U.S. 41, and becomes 2-lane again as it enters Marinette, Wisconsin, just before it goes into Michigan's Upper Peninsula.  It stays 2-lane (except for some short stretches here and there) all the way to Copper Harbor at the tip of Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, where it is at that point little more than a winding, narrow 2-lane paved country road.  It makes a loop at the northern terminus, with a commemorative sign which I've chosen to show below.

So I've had the privilege of driving on U.S. 41 in its entirety from Copper Harbor down to the Illinois state line.  I can tell you that the best part, at least in my opinion, is very definitely in Yooperland!

In the summer of 2009 I'm sitting poolside on a very warm day enjoying a very cold adult beverage trying to think of a better name for a Twitter account I had opened earlier that year that I had yet to use, other than lurking around the Twitterverse, out of curiosity.

XM radio was blasting country music, this song came on...

http://tinyurl.com/l2pq4na

Immediately, my new Twitter name was born!

Pourme is my online name everywhere it is available when I enroll, except EBAY which predates my Twitter account.

On this forum, like others I feel comfortable revealing my given name as well. My Twitter experience has developed as well and my real name is commonly used in conversations.

(My wife's Twitter name is PourmeMaw, my sister's is Poursis, I have a fictional Teddy Bear Twitter character named (@)PourTed.)

Yes, I agree about the blue 1954 Kaiser Manhattan. It's gorgeous and something not often seen around these parts. I don't remember any Kaisers growing up and I'm eleven years older than K-F67. I do remember my dad saying my English teacher's husband owned one, and dad said "he drove a KAISER" like it was something special. Those cars were unique even when new. I particularly like how yours is bone stock too. I prefer my cars and my phones original. I've been called a purist and I guess it's true and I couldn't change if I wanted to. Seeing that Kaiser does my heart good, as they say. Thanks for posting the picture. The boat looks great too and especially behind the car. The taillights of that car are its best feature.

I worry over internet security, as ive had my identity stolen in the past. So I never put down any valuable info online.

I love restorations, whether im working on a classic car, vintage tv, amplifier, radio, or a wood working project. I love to bring life back to old machines.  When something cant be restored, I enjoy modernizing it, or retro modding as its known. Thus I end up with things like early 50s tv sets with high def crt internals,  mid 50s style tube radio internals in 1920s radio cases, etc.  So basically if it cant be restored by me, i WILL be playing with it and modding it.

BTW, KaiserFrazer, thats a beautiful car. Thanks for posting. So few people have a love for these oddballs, i appreciate when i see someone whos into them.

When I turned 65, I realized I may be getting older. So I started using the user name oldguy or some variation like oldguy65, oldguy065, depending on the requirements. In a couple of weeks I will be turning 70, now that's old. I still work part time, grade the driveway mow the fields (my wife calls it playing with my tractors, probably true), playing with & building 4X4s & of course restoring phones. Now Thats retirement. I have always included my 1st name on my posts because I like communicating by name.

Post by: SunriseEarth on September 04, 2018, 06:50:34 PM
Ah, yes...SunriseEarth is my screenname across many, many forums and sites.   I chose that name after a TV show that was on Discovery HD Theater about 10 years that simply showed the sun rising at different beautiful, natural locations around the world.   There was no narration...only the sound of nature.  It was extremely tranquil and serene.

As I am a night owl, it was very rare that I'd have the opportunity to watch this show, but I did when I could.   So there is some irony that my name would celebrate morning when I am a night person.

Although full names are preferred here (and I think mine is in my signature), I used my screenname for consistency's sake.   I'll answer to Tony or Sunrise; just don't call me "Anthony" unless I'm in trouble.

This is my 1st post here. WooHoo. My username has been my nickname for the past 30 years. Someone gave it to me in high school and it stuck. I used it for my DJ name back when I was in College Radio. Captain is an honorary title and term of endearment. Roosh is a derivation and shortening of my last name. Many people call me Capt. or Roosh. Once in college a friend called me by my given name John another DJ was nearby and said "John? That's your real name?!" I said "Yeah! What did you think when I was born my mother named me Captain?" He said "Yeah!" Anyway been using it ever since.

I am changing mine right now.

I am not very creative or imaginative, so my identities on the Internet usually are my initials and random digits. That is how I ended up with w2538; it was next on my list to use.  I was not satisfied with that, and after reading through this entire thread, I had a brainstorm and was inspired to change mine.

I will now be known as 3463319.  This was my grandmother's telephone number (disconnected long ago).  I seems appropriate because her house is where my interest in telephones first began.  I will post that story sometime.

I will keep my avatar as my turquoise Kellogg 500, because it is one of my favorites.

As suggested earlier in this thread, I added my real name to my signature line.  It seems friendlier that way.  I am wary of showing my full name on the Internet, though.  Probably no harm would come from it, but I am somewhat of an introvert and maybe do not want the publicity, lol.

I like some, have just found this thread, my moniker is not anything challenging to figure out.
I like to keep it simple, besides if I made it any more complicated I'd forget what it meant.
"RDP", that's my initials, Ron etc. etc. and the "ipes" together with the "RDP" is the small company
I had making hand made smoking pipes for the past near ten years until I closed the doors in
February this year. That's another story on its own. Been using it for that long so why change it now?
Besides it's like changing your mailing address or email, ya have to tell everyone or they wont be able
to find ya anymore, of course after some thought, that might be a GOOD idea.

I am changing mine one more time, and I think this will be the last time.  I had a difficult time thinking of anything, but I have finally found one I like.

As a starting point, I thought, I could be "Kellogg Griffin," since that is my avatar picture, but "Griffin" could be someone's name, so I needed something different.  Part of the griffin's body is a lion, so how about "Kellogg Lion"?  That seems silly, but maybe "Kellogg Cat" would work?  Or even better, "Kellogg Kat."  I almost liked it, but  it made something better pop into my mind:

Kellogg Kitt!

What does that mean?  It ties a childhood memory to my present day telephone collection, many of which are Kellogg-ITT.

My earliest memory of noticing a detail on a telephone was on the beige 554 set in my grandmother's kitchen when I was about 7 or 8 years old.  It was marked "Kellogg-ITT", but I thought it said "Kellogg KITT".  I assumed that the telephone had come from the factory as a box of parts (a "kit") and that my (by that time deceased) grandfather had built it himself.  I never figured out why it was spelled with two T's, though!

By the time I became interested in telephones, quite a few years later, I noticed that the wall set in the kitchen had been replaced with an ITT 554 set, but all the 500 sets in the house were still Kellogg-ITT.  Hidden under the number card of one of those 500 sets was where I first saw the griffin logo, once I started taking these things apart.

Every one in a while, I have a little chuckle when I see a phone for sale on eBay described as "Kellogg Kitt."

Thanks for reading my little story.  Here is a picture of the "Kellogg-KITT" logo for those who are not familiar with it.

I had to look up "F.A.B. - Thunderbirds are go" on Google to find out what it means and ended up watching a few clips of the show.  You have a cool user name and avatar, and very memorable.  Whenever I see the car, I know it is FABphones!
