Braided handset cord

Just curious , I have a braided handset cord and was wondering , what was used first the braided cord or the cloth covered cord? Were the braided cords an upgrade ??

I had a A.E. extensia cord, stretched it a little too far and the elastic string broke.  It became an instant braided cord.  Then I figured out where those braided cords were coming from.  Just a broken Extensia Cord.  Of course I'm not referring to the european braided cords.

Many of the British phones came with what I call braided cords but I think they call them plaited cords. Yes, AE Extensicords are very similar when the elastic gives up.
