Pay phone, not mounted?

These are neophyte questions, as I don't own a pay phone and have never really worked with one.

Is the typical three-slot pay phone flat enough on the bottom so that it can safely sit on a counter without being mounted? Or MUST it be mounted on something?

What about the typical, more modern, single-slot pay phone?  Can one of those safely sit on a counter?  Or must they be mounted as well?

I can say the single slots are very flat on the bottom and sit up easily, but they're very top heavy and try to slide around and might tip over easily.  I sure wouldn't rely on one sitting up on its own unless it was in a protected display(no chance of anyone bumping it and ending up having it fall and crush their feet).  ---Eric

I echo Eric.  Don't take chances.  Mount them solidly on the wall.  They are so heavy and top-heavy that they can do some real damage to a table top or anything else they fall on.

Ok.  Thanks for the advice.  I'll forget my idea of putting a payphone on my narrow kitchen divider counter.  I live in an apartment so mounting a payphone is not practical.

My 1C2 sits quite happily on its base, on a desk top.
