Title: Opening titles in TV etc
Post by: gpo706 on August 16, 2009, 10:26:32 AM
You can't have a decent opening title sequence without some bloke answering a phone in a dramatic manner, can you?

Like so:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AO858d7sSeA

He does the hat-trick of phone answering, smashing an intercom with his index finger and ripping the paper roll off a TELEX printer.

Now that's what I call class!

Hey, what about Donna Reed?  She beat out Jim Rockford by a good decade or more.

gpo706 gets the credit for all the clips!

I suppose there's a Donna Reed Show opening sequence out there somewhere but others would find it a lot more efficiently than I would.

Whoops, Thanks for the correction, Ralph. And thanks gpo706 for the clips.

I'll look around for some Donna Reed sequences involving phones, opening sequences and otherwise.
Of course there's this classic:

and here's the opening sequence featuring the 5302/F1:

Yes!  That's the Donna Reed Show opening sequence with the 500 that I was remembering.  I recall my dad always knowing his "girlfriend" was on TV when that 500 would ring.  I think that phone turned white in later seasons.  Is it just me, or does it look like that black 500 has a grey handset cord that would normally be used on a colored phone?

Thanks for posting!

Ralph

Wait a minute; isn't the phone not a 500, but a 5302 with an F1 handset?
(My mistake at first, and I edited my previous post.)
And yes, to me at least, the cord doesn't look black, unless it's a trick of the light.

BTW, I have the exact same phone, though the dates may vary. Mine has a black cord. Now may I call it my "Donna Reed" phone? ;)

Also, if Donna was your Dad's "girlfriend"...we could be related, as she was our "other mother". :D

Any tv into that combines a Sunbeam Tiger with a 60's payphone must be a show worth watching:

Welcome operator.  I'd forgotten that opening for Get Smart, very cool, and I recall thinking at the time how amazingly neat it was that the doors opened automatically for him.

Wow, good catch Matt!

So now I have to ask this.  Are there any clips with phone ringing and handset jumping around in the cradle?  I'd like to figure out a way to make that happen.  G3 would probably work best.

I looked for a clip, but that of course only happens in cartoons. We used to do a lot of mechanical special effects in theater productions, and I'm sure it could be done somehow, if one just wanted the comical effect.

Hook up a solonoid from a buzzer, with the push rod up through the handset plunger hole, or connected to the plunger. When you energize it the handset will jump around. Any low voltage plunger type solonoid should work, even 110 volt types.

Here's one I haven't seen posted yet. The first couple years of The Bob Newhart Show opened with Bob answering the 2565 keyset in his office with "Hello" and then the music started. There isn't a YouTube clip of it, that I can find, so you'll have to be satisfied with the audio clip and your imagination.

Anyone else remember the yellow 2702 Bob and Emily had on the counter at the shelves in the living room? Bob Newhart was also famous for his telephone routines in his comedy act.

Just to elaborate a little, you could hook up a solonoid to a working phone, and hook the wires to the ringer. As the ringer rings, the solonoid would also bounce the handset. When the ringer stops the handset would also stop.

Yeah, Dan, that's kind of what I was thinking.  The ringing and jiggling need to happen simultaneously and ideally be generated from the same source.  I think I know of someone locally who could help with this.  I have a black '56-ish 500 that needs a handset.  I'll keep an eye out for a cheap 500 with a G3 and one of these days in my "spare time" mess around with this concept.

Unless somebody here beats me to it (highly likely) and posts a clip of their handiwork.

Ralph;
All you will need to make it is an solonoid that vibrates at the same voltage as the ringers, and old doorbell buzzer maybe.

This isn't the opening title, but it's a clip showing a running gag from a British show called The Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin. I always loved to see the office scenes when Reggie had these different colored phones on his desk and he always said what color phone he was on when he answered it. He does that at the beginning of this clip. I guess I should say colour for you Brits. The sound effects of the chair aren't bad too. In this scene he and his boss CJ have traded places.  Perhaps someone knows what model telephones these are. I've seen them in other British shows, but never in so many colors. I know a bit about old British comedy, but very little about the phones.

jsowers, the yellow is a 746, you can see the body screw at the back above the linecords, the others dont have these so they will be 706's which attach the body under the handset cradle (with 2 screws).

I errrr, still make folks answering my phones state which colour they are on, all thanks to Reggie...

Not an opening scene, but it's the Bat phone and Cat phone and Commissioner Gordon's other phones:  (Cat phone looks more like a lamb phone to me).

Some great nostalgia clips and telephony on this thread - great theme tune on the first clip, but I have never heard of the show 'The Adventurer'. Must look it up.

John Barry certainly wrote some catchy tunes, 'The Persuaders' one of my favourite shows and theme tunes, and with the gorgeous Tony Curtis too (be still my beating heart). An array of phones on Danny Wilde's desk - lots of phones on a desk portrayed a very important person.

Shame so many dead links on this thread, would like to have seen more.

Re: RP123 about phones ringing and the hanset jumping around.
There's a phone that does that in "To Be or Not to Be" in the original Jack Benny version and in the later Mel Brooks version of the movie.
