Title: I am a New Member to your Forum - Doug Rose AKA Kidphone
Post by: Doug Rose on December 29, 2009, 11:35:31 AM
My name is Doug Rose and I am a new member of your forum, but not a new collector. I have worked in the Telecom/IT/Systems industry in Boston for the past 30 years. I have also been collecting telephones for the past 30 years. Coincidence? I collect telephones, porcelain signs and telephone go withs from the 1890's to the early 50s. At this time, I am a member of both the TCI and ATCA. It is refreshing to see a forum about Vintage telephones, that actually discusses vintage telephones! I wasn't sure where to place this, so since I am a collector, Collector's Corner was the winner. I see some familiar names and hope to make more names familiar......Doug   aka "Kidphone"

Hi Doug and you are most welcome! Wow, thirty years of phone collecting! I've only been at it for a year so I'm just an amateur. We would love to see pictures of your collection posted anytime.

This is indeed a great forum full of good talented folks. We do mostly talk about phones here, but there's also some room for many other interesting subjects in the off topic section.

Welcome Doug!  It surely is great to have you aboard.  The experiences and knowledge you bring will enhance the forum and our learning experiences.   Feel free to post often and talk about your collection.  I think I can speak on behalf of everyone when I say that the members are open to seeing and discussing new things---in fact welcome them.  In my case I have only been at telephone collecting a relatively short period of time and will benefit from your input.  As you said in recognizing a few names, there are some experienced collectors that participate regularly and share their knowledge too---which is what makes this hobby so enjoyable.

Welcome Doug
As you probably have seen we are a few from outside America too charing your interests.
This makes us (at least me) learning a lot of telephone history.

Best Regards from Norway

Hey Doug!
Welcome! I'm new to phone collecting, but, love it and really enjoy this forum! I know you will, too. Everyone is very nice and willing to share their knowledge and information about phones and other things. What a wonderful addition you will make to this forum's family of phone collectors!

Doug;
Welcome, please post photos and comment often.
Did you pick the name Kidphone, when you first started collecting, or a play on KIDROCK ?
I've been collecting for about a year or so, been interested in phones all my life, but never collected more than a couple at a time. Now in the past year I've accumulated about 75 of which 25 are on display. Most are in working order.
What I like about telephone collecting, is you can see real results fast, not like other hobbies where they crawl along so slow, you have to take photos to see the changes, plus you don't have to be an engineer to work on them.

Welcome to the forum!  Glad to have you.  I am pretty new at this, only been at it for about a year.  I must say that 30 years at it is very impressive.  Glad to have you.

Also, the pics a little small but that looks like a nice mid-century ranch in your avatar.  Looks like you have good taste all around!!

Thanks to all who have made me feel very welcome. I have added some pictures of my phone room as you have requested. Kidphone came from all the Boxers of the 50s and 60s who had Kid before their name. Who can forget Elvis in Kid Galahad. For you young guys, not Elvis Costello.....thanks....Kidphone

There aren't many words to describe that collection!  Amazing!

That first photo would make a great jig-saw puzzle.  Real tiny puzzle pieces.  But then again, I guess they all would.

I'd be like a kid in a candy store looking at all those in person.  Where would one begin?  Among other phones, I really like your red, pink and blue Continentals.

Wow.  Thanks for posting those!

Hi Doug,
I am glad you found the forum, It is a lot funner than the list servers have been (lately).
You have a great collection.
Your collection is a prime example of what happens once the telephone collecting infection takes hold.

I have been fortunate enough that I have been only mildly infected.

Kidphone,

A BIG Welcome to a BIG, BIG, BIG, phone collector. Your phone room is like a phone wonderland. I'm one of the newest members here. The folks (very knowledgeable) here helped me get my black WE 302 up and going. I noticed you have what looks like a gray Connecticut to the left of the TV. I was given one a few weeks ago. Yours is the third one I've ever seen. Your collection is totally awesome.

It is certainly a great feeling to see the enthusiasm that all of you have for Telephones. In the other clubs that I am in, vintage telephones seem to have taken a back seat , which is why I reached out to you. I enjoy this hobby very much. There is still no better feeling than getting a beat up piece of history and restoring it to its past glory. When I give one for a gift, people are amazed that it still works! And that RING!!   ....thanks again.....Kidphone

WOW!!! Great phones!  :o :o :o
I'm amazed at those colored 302's you've amassed. And I thought my hoard of rotary phones was big. Now when my mom says I have too many phones I can show her your collection.  :D This "hobby" really turns out into an obsession or "lifestyle" I'd call it. People do seem surprised that the phones still work, or at least most of them. we have a vacation home in Palm Springs and yesterday the GTE Verizon guy came to install phone service. After they install the phone they usually come inside and dial the household phone to test that everything works. I made sure my 500 was plugged in to see his reaction. (yeah I know I should be using AE phones here but I love my AE80 too much to leave in PS all alone) He wasn't surprised at all! All he said was that they are good phones. Maybe more people are still using rotary phones than we realize. While I do love the listservs, this forum has a much better interface and lets you directly post pictures.

Speaking of Red 302, this past September I finally got my Red 302. Since then I've seen two of them sell for under $500.00, one was in excellent shape, mine is also in near new condition, but I paid way more than $500.00 for it.
I still think I didn't get burned too bad, but then I should have waited a few months.

Dan, hind-sight is 20-20.  What seems to happen is that yours sold for whatever it sold for prompting those two others to think, hey I've got one of those and they list them after seeing the high sale price.  So it seems that one doesn't see something for a long time and then suddenly there are a few of them for sale.

I actually did show my folks this collection, and told them that mine WILL looks like this one day.

Also, when I talk to people I am surprised how many still have and/or use rotary phones in their homes.

Awesome phone collection, and they all look to be in excellent condition.  Do you refurbish them yourself?

You can get more than one pic per post by clicking on "(more attachments)" next to the browse button.  You can post 6 pics per post.

I'm curious about this one, it looks like an E1 style handset with a dial in the middle?

D/P....I was fortunate to get mine. Last November I bid on one that was in mis-advertised in Electronics on eBay. I bid at the last second, but was outbid, but it did not make reserve. I was given a second chance offer! I was speechless (for me, no an easy thing). I paypaled it right away, even getting a 20% electronics coupon from eBay to boot. I got the phone and was thrilled with it. I asked the Lady why she gave me the second chance and not the high bidder. Feedback! So it does make a difference. For the price I purchased it, I should have had on a mask with a gun. Below picture is how i received it! I just wiped the phone off and recurled the handset cord. It looks brand new with the exception of the quarter size chip in the back. ....Kidphone

Congratulations on that red 302, Doug.  Wow.  That's the kind of deal I'd like to run into.  Sometimes we win and sometimes we don't.  I have decided that my next focus will be trying to get the colored 302's.  But I'm going to have to buy the ones with damage cause I can't afford the big bucks for one.  I do have a nice one in Old Rose.  Mark Scola repaired the corner for me but it looks great and I'm happy to have it.  I see Green and Red the most on eBay.  Maybe I'll find a blue one at the flea market next summer.  :)

I will indeed Matt.  I forgot I do have an Ivory 302 that I picked up recently.  However it has the usual corner crack.  I haven't had a minute to work on that one yet but it should turn out very nice.  It's a great phone and I got it very reasonably.
