Automatic Electric model 50 works but can't hear very well

I got this phone and it's in need of a good cleaning but I hook it up and the sound in the earpiece is very faint.  What can I do to make this better.  As you can probably tell I'm new to this field but I know enough to be dangeous.  Thanks for the help

I use an AE 50 as my basement phone currently. It knocked the turquoise WE554 out of the rotation. It has a beautiful ring and the chrome dial and bands are deco-licious (my wife's adjective after she had a couple of wine coolers).

Thanks for the help!  I cleaned up the dial contacts and now I can hear fine, but now the ringer doesn't work.  I've got another post going for that problem but if anyone reads this and knows how to fix it I'd be glad for any info.
