Sometimes things are better left to the imagination.  But since we're all taking the plunge........

Here's a photo of me that my son took just the other day.  I'll call this my "old" photo.

The second photo is one of me doing what I loved to do and that's fly.  This photo was taken five years ago and was the last day I flew in December of 2003.  It's my "younger" picture.  I hope to get back into it again.  I spent ten years involved in flying before that day.  Like Forrest Gump, it seems like I just stopped.  You think collecting phones is expensive.........

The unprecedented third photo is was taken in year #25 of a 30 year career.  A self portrait "on the job".

Sure, I will play along.... Here I am in my home office, I just got a new Stetson in the mail the other day and had to take a photo to show a friend of mine.  Sorry it's a little bit of a close up, I was holding the camera to take this picture!   ;)

Dan/Panther, your photos remind me of the song, "Signs".........what were the lyrics?  Something like, ".......long haired freaky people need not apply, so I tucked my hair up under my hat and went in to ask them why..........."

So, Hobie is paddling his kayak through a field of grass and poison plants with a plumber's helper in one hand and a hubcap in the other.  Behind him is a fence to keep the alligators out, and under his foot is a well-cover, so he can fill the field with water, perhaps with help from the plunger??

D/P, get your eagle-eyes on his badges - why is there a buffalo on his shoulder?

Dan, there's only an age limit if you plan to fly commercially.  As long as you can pass the FAA's physical and have the ability to spend money, you're in.  Anyone over the age of 40 has to get an FAA physical every 2 years to fly with a Private Pilot's license.  They have a new class of license called "Recreational Pilot" but does not require a medical certificate but the pilot is limited to a radius of only 50 miles from his/her home airport with no travel in certain air spaces.  So if you go to a small airport out in the Country, away from a larger City with restricted air space you can fly in a 50 mile circle with that license and don't need a medical.  Shoot, there are guy 80 years old flying for fun.

Wow Dan/Panther!  Did not expect you to remind me so much of my father, as far as the abundance of Tattoos, not the hair.

Love the Stetson by the way, I'm looking for one similar to that!  A fred bear type one, ya know?

Here's a couple of yours truly.

That pic of me in the Calif State Parks outfit was last Summer in Parks Maintenance.  We often got confused with the rangers, and I had to point out the difference to the campers:
Rangers carry Glocks.  Maintenance carries Garbage. :)
That's an abalone shell that I'm holding.  And no, that's not poison oak. ;)

Matt;
You could have blown me over with a feather, I never guessed California. I just don't associate Buffalo with California. More Kansas, Wyoming, or Montana.

Tom;
That photo of you leaning over the fender of the old Ford, 1927 model A ? I could find a hundred photos taken in the late forties, and early fifties that would fit right in with it.

Dennis;
You were Law Enforcement ?

Knowing California as I do, seeing as how I was born here and such, I think the toilet plunger ought to be on the state flag as well, maybe the bear could be holding it in one hand or something.

Oops, sorry for that grossy political joke.  (At least I think it's a joke) ;)

It's actually a 31 Model A, but it's hard to tell, since she has a 1930 Chevy Grille Shell and a built 350 and a TH350 trans.  I miss this truck a lot!

Your eyes must be going there D/P.  My dad has tattoos on both forearms, of Native American Squaws (sp.) as my mom is one.  He has a tattoo which consists of an eagle head in front of a  Confederate flag with harley Davidson underneath it, on his right upper arm, and barbed wire on the other.

My mom has a leather band with a feather with a red tip, which symbolizes victory in the iroquois nation.  She has Tom Sr, Tommy, Robert Lee, and Dixie in hearts on her shoulderblade (my family) and the bluebird of happiness.

I'm waiting to see what careeer I get into before I decide where my tattoos will go, but I really want pinup girls on my forearms, the good ol 50's style bettie pages, ya know?!

I have a fairly good collection of Ocean Liner Books, tape,s and memorabilia. I belong to the, "Titanic Historical Siciety", and was a Founding member of the "Queen Mary Foundation". I also have a postcard from Queenstown, from the Titanic, and I got to meet 6 of the last survivors in 1988 at the 25th convention of the T.H.S., in Boston.
I video taped Frank Aks, Eva Hart, and Ruth Becker Blanchard, and 2 other survivors, now since passed away.
You know the Titanic was an American owned Vessel, J.P. Morgans Mechantile Marine.
A bit of trivia here, White Star lines was J.P Morgans first financial failure, They owned Titanic.  Titanics insurance bailed his butt out. He was also a scheduled passenger on the maiden voyage, along with many of his Financial competitors, and he cancelled at the last minute. Could it possibly have been Sabotage ???
Being an American owned Vessel, yet the Post Office has never featured The Titanic on a stamp. I think that is rather sad. Maybe coming up on the 100 th anniversary maybe it will get a stamp.
But being it's on April 15th, the IRS will probably get a stamp instead.

Oh my, can't believe this, really?? I'm talking to one of the founding member of Queen Mary Foundation? D/P your cool!

I know this is a little bit going off topic, my only significant ocean liner memorabilia is a stamp of the French Line's Normandie dated May 29, 1935 which was mailed on board the said ship during its maiden voyage and a water color post card of the Queen Mary. I don't have much books about ocean liners but I have some books about the Titanic

While we're on the subject of great ocean liners, here is an interesting article on the S.S. Constitution, whose interiors where designed by Henry Dreyfuss.  Where else could one find a link between Dreyfuss, Cary Grant, Debra Kerr, Lucy Ricardo and Grace Kelly? :)

http://www.jetsetmodern.com/affair.htm

...and her sister ship, The S.S. Independence, also by Dreyfuss, still sailing strong since 1950:

Gee I'd love to take a cruise on one of these great classic liners.  In my dreams.

I have been very fortunate in my life to have done many interesting things.
What really happens is I get into things and go hole hog, and cram as much information about the topic at hand, and try to go where it happened.

I hope it doesn't sound like I'm blowing smoke. I do not like to brag, and hope that is not what it appears.

I feel very fortunate to live within driving distance to go and partake of the very interesting people that usually speak at the event. My Father and I went to the 25th Anniverasry convention in Boston in 1989, Ironically 6 months before my Dad passed away. A fond memory I will always cherish.

We will of course be expecting pictures of that venerable ship!

I regret not going on a three hour jaunt on the liberty ship, SS Jeremiah O'Brien a couple of years ago to see the Q.M. II come into SF Bay on her maiden voyage.

In 1968 I was a campaign associate for Robert Kennedy in Orange County California, He gave a speech at the Yearly Strawberry Festival, and I got to meet and shake his hand on June 2, 1968, 3 days later he was assassinated.
He was leaving the High School Football stadium, standing up in the Back of a convertible, being held around the waste by Roosevelt Greer, and Rafer Johnson. I was amazed that his hand was VERY calloused, and felt very hard and had a very firm handshake. Getting to look Eye to eye with him was a very special treat for me.
I still have the box of different flyers, and pins and bumper sticker in my storage.
I put the stuff away, taped the box shut, and told my then wife, "The last hope for this country just died". I still feel that way to this day. When Robert kennedy died, the last real peoples candidate died with him. This country has never been the same since.

A three hour tour I think you mean Hobie....a three hour tour LOL.

D/P you are a fascinating individual.  And I think we all enjoy all the stories.  I hope that as I go on in my life I get to do such interesting things.  A Bobby Kennedy fan, eh?  That's cool you got to shake his hand.  I'm a Reagan man myself, but unfortunately will never get to shake the man's hand.  These days I'm a Mike Huckabee man.

Heck, in my eyes, you're just lucky because you were around in 1968.  I wish I woulda been!

Dan, that's a great memory.  You're a lucky guy.  I was 13 in 1968 and remember Bobby Kennedy's assassination very well.   I always like him and was heart broken when that happened.  I still have a couple of periodicals that I saved following the assassination.  He was certain to win the Democratic nomination if not the election that year.  "It's on to Chicago---and let's win there..............."

I will have to admit, when I hear his speech the night Martin Luther king was assassinated, or the speech at the Ambassador Hotel, even 41 years later, I can't watch without crying...

Tom;
I also am a Reagan man, back in '68" Kennedy was more a Reagan type then what people commonly refer to as Democratic liberal today, it almost seems that they've switched sides of the isle.
The reason I feel we will never see the likes a of a Robert Kennedy again, is because they fear what might happen to them. I think that is why many shoo-ins, don't run.

See, I learned something new today D/P.  I always thought he was a crooked leftist liberal, much like my pa always says his brother was.  But then again, I grew up in a staunch conservative household.  Not nearly a day goes by where the greatness of Ronald Wilson Reagan is not discussed here haha.

Exactly, ands that is why I think the man died...

Tom;
You are right, they're all crooks...

Besides Reagan, the three Presidents I admire the most are, Lincoln, Teddy Roosevelt, and  Truman, or like my dad used to say; "Old Hairy Ass truman".

Two years ago, I purchased a Chinese set of copper bottom Revere ware. They are absolutely great to cook in, like teflon if you follow the low heat rule.
I think they take less heat to cook with, and the heat is evenly spread.

Yes.  I should have clarified that I just included the merger activity influencing my area code.

There were obviously a lot of other components that went into NYNEX, Bell Atlantic, and Verizon, and a number of spinoffs.

Somehow it must all fit into this classic spoof:

Haha, it was confined space rescue training. We had to wear breathing apparatus to simulate... well, wearing breathing apparatus. We had to rescue a person from the hole, while in an IDLH environment (Immediately dangerous to life and health).

So yeah, the guy passed enough gas so that he lost consciousness and we had to rescue him :D

I'll post some pics, but I claim no responsibility for the impact on your physical, or mental health! ;)

First one, inspired by Dennis Markham, is from the days when we could afford to fly! 100LL is + $6.63/gal. here, as of yesterday.

My theory: if ya gotta spend the $ to fly, fly a really cool Warbird.

This one was snapped by a fan while I was deep in the throes of a Hendrix solo, just prior to playing with my teeth. I know, 'cause they got the teeth picture, too.

It's an extremely rare gig photo, actually, because 99% of the time, I have my eyes closed, and let the music pour though me. Only way I know how to do it.

Thanks for posting that.  I'm jealous of you in that airplane.  It's been a while now since I've been pilot in command.  I vowed to get back in the air this spring but I'll have to wait and see how it goes.  I think I was paying about $3 for 100LL when I last owned an airplane.  So that tells you how long it's been.  I did rent a few times after my partner and I sold our airplane.

The closest thing I've flown to a war bird is a Yak 52---a Russian trainer.  The largest plane I flew was a Ford Tri-Motor from the right seat.  I paid for a ride and the PIC let me sit up front and take the controls once airborne.  It was awesome.

Nice picture!

Thanks, Dennis!

I, in turn, am jealous of you for having been partners in an airplane. I was just renting.

The aircraft was a SNJ-6, belonging to North American Top Gun, now sadly, defunct. I used to save all year, for an hour of stick time. Not pictured is National Aerobatics Champion Paul Wolski, my safety net.

The AT-6G/SNJ-6 is more common, and certainly no more cool than a YAK 52. Where do I sign up for the YAK flights? or the Tri-Motor? I should be OK, got some right seat in an AC-47, B-17G, B-25J, C-130,727-200, C-141, etc. Still here, ain't I?  :)

5G capability, with an instructor constantly coaxing you to pull 6-7+, now that is cool, I won't lie!

What an incredible guy! He never once took the aircraft from me, just coached, coaxed, coerced, and comforted me through an hour of 5+ G's. On all the in-flight videos I have, his hands are in the air, talking to me. Reminds me of being stationed in Sicily... :D

Beyond the expected co$t of aerobatic Warbird instruction, it likely ruined several pairs of knickers over the years. ;D I personally can't think of any bigger rush, legally, or otherwise, and I might have done a thing or two, been here and there, tried this and that, over half a century.

Me? I wanna get about 100 hrs stick time in a Stearman! Now, that's flying!!

Hey!

How did airplanes get onto this forum!!

I have had the honor of spending a bit of time in several WWII aircraft as a result of knowing folks who own them and are generous enough to take me along.  Luckily, my wife gets a kick out of old airplanes too...she actually has left seat stick-time in the CAF's B-29.

I got to travel from Colorado to Florida in a PT-22 a few years ago...three days and 18 stops to get to Florida...5 cylinders and straight exhaust pipes...sounded like crossing the country behind a John Deere!  Also, several trips across the country in T-6s and a C-45.

The first photo is a picture of me doing my best Harrison Ford.  The picture was taken about 15 years ago...before everything started to turn gray!

The second is the PT-22 I flew to Florida in.

The last is a picture taken by my wife of me in one AT-6 while she is riding in the back of another.

Neither of us are pilots, but we have fun with airplanes when we get the chance.

Hey!

How did airplanes get onto this forum!!

Well, Dennis started it, and I sort of took the ball and ran. We are in the Off-Topic part, so all should be OK, as long as we don't mention the TelephXXX word ;D

CO to FL in a PT-22? Cripes-a-mighty! :o That must have been some experience! My hat is off to you, sorry for the glare!

Kudos to your wife, as well, for having stick time in Fifi. Jealous, here, chum, and no mistakin' it! I'm a CAF member as well, but haven't had the privilege, or opportunity.

Thanks for the cool pics, I recognize Navy#44, but not the RAF one the pic was taken from.

Best regards!

This was posted a few years ago, but I just now saw it and figured I mention that I was aboard the Queen Mary when it was in New York in about 1961 or so.

I was at a family gathering and was bored, so my father suggested that I go to the docks and see what ships were in port.  I went up to the guy at the gangplank and asked if I could go aboard and look around.  He said, "Sure, just get off the ship when you hear the ship's horn blow."

I had a great time looking around and when the horn sounded, I got off in a hurry!  At about 11 years old, I was not ready to be an accidental stowaway!

One could not do that now, but it is a fun memory of what one can experience if brave enough to ask!

Terrence,

The RAF marked aircraft is one of the AT-6s that was shipped directly to the South African Air Force and served with them from 1943 to 1995!!!

It was shipped back to the US and my friend purchased it in the late '90s.  It was in the modern S.A. trainer paint job and the paint was fading, so he had it painted in WWII North African RAF livery with a South African Springbok on the tail.  (His grandfather flew with the RAF in North Africa)  The paint job is an attention getter at air shows!

Nick,

Thanks for the great photos of the SAAF AT-6! I haven't seen her before today, but will keep my eyes peeled!

I was looking around the web, trying to find my old girlfriends. Found one at History Flight.com.

DBT, Dark Blue Texan, is shown there. Glad she has a happy home. "Lawrence, Lawrence, this is Dark Blue Texan, approaching the pattern from downwind..."

Gotta find the other, LBT Light Blue Texan. My first Warbird aerobatic experience. Sigh. You never forget the first time you pull 6+ G's in an aircraft. Especially with an instructor telling you "pull Pull PULL, TERRENCE!"

I know that it is not cool to admit it, but although I love airplanes - working on them, flying them or flying in them - I have a "straight and level" stomach.

I love the idea of aerobatics, but the reality is that my stomach doesn't!

I've only ever flown twice, to Orly Sud airport outside of Paris, and to Teesside airport on the return journey, where the pilot decided to bounce the plane side to side down the runway........ :o

Not the sort of experience anyone wants on their 2nd ever flight... :D

However, my younger brother is in the RAF cadets, and is nearing completion of his flight training, so that he can fly solo, not sure what he plans to do with his piloting licence, but he does want to pilot commercial aircraft at some point, which could be handy... :D

Nick, not everybody can do aerobatics. It takes a bigger man, and a smarter one, to recognize these things, much less tell others about it. I have gained great respect for you from this post.

As Command Pilot, this is some very useful information on a Warbird aerobatics flight, since you are the one responsible for cleaning the cockpit!

It's a challenge for me to find glasses that fit because I have a big head.  :-)

The little guy fixing the "pone" is one of the two toddlers in the house.

The black car is the one I personally drive at the track, a K20A(*) DC5 ITR conversion, #110.  The white car #120 is on the track with my driver, and that car is built to Honda Challenge H2 specifications.  I'm getting old and get dizzy fairly quickly these days, so I don't get out quite as much.  But...it's still a blast and I can still surprise people.

  Terry,
I worked the last fifteen years (of 35) at Ma Bell as an Equipment Installer , that's the E.I. Dept , instaling testing and constantly updating Nortel DMS 100-200 and DMS 10 switching  systems . New England Tel was (or still is) unique among the Bell operating companies  having their own employees installing central office equipment. All the others had the manufacturers such as Western Electric , Northern Electric etc. do the job.
Very few people even in the phone company know the department exists.

Ironic! I worked my first 15 years as a COE Equipment Installer and am getting close to retirement now with 37 years in. The company I worked for was a wholly owned subsidiary of BC Tel and we did all of our own COE work too. We even did some contract work for mainly the three Prairie province Telco's; AGT, edmonton telephones, Sask tel and Manitoba Telecom as well as some work installing for Automatic Electric Canada out of Brockville Ontario.

Yes.  There's too many dogs, really.  That's just the tip of the iceberg.  It's a mess.  :-)

The humans are the real mess.

Chase is very tall for a border collie, but he's full blooded.  Getting old now.  He's 12.

It's a bike rack, holds up to 3 bikes.  Passenger folds it down to use it, folds it back up when not in use.

We don't have bike racks on our buses, probably cos of some european safety law that doesn't allow things attached to the front (they banned addon bullbars on most vehicles, cos they apparently went around killing children of their own accord, if you believed the hype!!), our local buses claim to allow bikes onto their buses (to promote eco-friendly transport, exercise, not using a car, etc.), but as soon as you try, the bus drivers say "no, can't let you on with that", even if the bay where you can put them is empty... ::)

That said though, if I were on my bike (if I ever get around to replacing the rear wheel), it'd be a lot faster going direct to where I'm going than to go by long and winding bus routes for a 5 mile journey that gets turned into a 20 mile journey... :D

You ride a bike at your own peril around these parts.  My bike riding friends tell me of how people throw stuff at them, cars swerve to run them off the road, and people shoot at them with pellet guns.   :-\

I've heard of that bullbar, we call them pushbars here, ban in the UK.  Seems that when a car hits you, bullbar or not, it's going to hurt real bad.
