A former user appears to have been a heavy smoker. I had to start over three times over in order to bring it up to an acceptable level of clean.

I have seen this so often on old bakelite that I started to believe the brown smut came from disintegrated phenolic bonding compound of the material itself. But maybe just the smoking habits were more unscrupulous back in the days. The picture was made when I cleaned my Amtsanschliesser which presumably was used in a railway control office.

Here's a copy of a W.E. 653-BA schematic I have on file in my schematics folder.     Not sure what the second suffix letter indicates, but I believe 653-A was a manual set, and 653-B was a dial setr for automatic service.

653-A (1653-A) can be manual or dial. 653-BA is the same as 653-A except that the 653-BA has a high-impedance ringer and a 0.5 microfarad capacitor.
