Thank you, Stan. This phone, based on the instruction card ("Listen for dial tone, deposit 10 cents, then dial"), was set up for DTF mode most recently in its revenue service time, so I will put the diode back in place.

Chris- doesn't make any difference. You can leave it out. You are only looking at half the equation. The other half is the operation of the central office when the payphone was in service. That type of phone line is no longer available. Some of the functions can be simulated with a payphone controller but not all of them. 73
