Was browsing ebay for an external ringer to complete a princess phone project and came across this oddity. Looks to me like it could be home made (?). I know they did make operator variant 500 sets with a selector switch and headset plug, which would make this sort of pointless.

Would have thought Ma Bell and WE would have packaged that all up a bit nicer, but for pure utility i suppose that wouldnt matter. What were these used for? Small key systems?

It is known as "4A Key Equipment." The 6026-type Key can be mounted on the side of a desk or table. Thus, only the dial would need to be on top of the desk, freeing up space.

Most of the time, these combos would be used in official service. Rarely saw them outside of a CO.

That explains its appearance.Honestly it looked like a collection of parts from a parts box someone had kicking around.

Thanks for the info, and that actually makes a lot of sense. Quite a compact set when you look at it that way.
