Found this excellent condition Northern Electric 464 G/G in an area antique shop for $30. I thought it was Western Electric when I got it home was pleasantly surprised to see it was a Northern Electric. All the bulbs are in place. Nice green cord with all the spade connectors in place. Has a 5H dial and the internal parts are dated 1956 & 1957. The Northern Electric handset is dated 1956.

What is the date on the dial? This is the first NE 5H dial I've seen with a short finger stop.

Difficult to see in the photo, but is it possible that the "5H 11-52" is stamped in vermilion ink, which would indicate a WE dial?

1952 NE dials will have "5H" embossed in the metal case, and the date will be stamped with ink other than red or vermilion (black or blue??).

It looks orange to me, not the brilliant red of vermillion. Maybe the vermillion paint faded?

All the NECo 5H dials of that time frame, that I have observed, look like this one from 1955:

Does it actually state "Northern Electric" in the inscription?  It is probably not visible until you remove the dial.

But since the dial is of such a different date than the rest of the phone, it is likely that it was replaced with a WECo type.

I can't see much of the bottom back of the dial due to the gasket but I agree it's probably a Western Electric. I will watch for a Northern Electric dial dated as close to 56/57 as possible.

Follow up question. Since this NE phone is dated 1957 I'd like to replace the WE 1952 5H dial that is in it with a 1957 NE 5H dial. Does such a dial exist?

I have a Northern Electric No. 6 dial that was made in Sept. 1956.
So, most likely your set should also have a No. 6 dial.

Do we know when NE stopped making the 5H dial? What is the newest date known on a NE 5H?

I think we discussed this previously here somewhere,  without definitive answer, IIRC.
But it must have been very close to the time we are discussing right now.

The 5H dial is last mentioned in catalogs in 1955, it appears, but I don't think we have any catalogs between 1955 and the 60s.

I think the wooden wall sets, such as N717xx, came with a 6A dial starting 1956 or so.  I do think there are examples of that here on the forum, too.

Okay, thanks. I'll see if I can find a 1957 dated NE #6 dial.
