We have a 354 wall phone in the kitchen, and I can hear my wife better from that phone than from the 302 in the bedroom or the 2500 touch tone in the basement.  Is the 304/354 the long-loop version of the 302, or is this particular phone just a super good one?

No, the 304 was for "tip party id" to identify which of 2 parties to bill for measured rate lines, usually in cities.

Long loop might have used a 302 with F4 handset (T1 transmitter and U1 receiver), or a 307 (common battery signaling, local battery talking).

354s, like 500s, could be used for tip party ID, but were usually not. It was just a cost savings to standardize on one model. (WE did not make 352s.)
