If you have access to a scope and a signal generator you can get really accurate here is good video on it:

I'd guess the DC Ohm values would be a good enough indicator. Assuming both coils have 2 windings, relatively similar  resistance in the 15...40 Ohm range would be typical for a central battery induction coil. A coil for local battery would have dissimilar values, like 1...10 Ohm vs. 50...200 Ohm.

The earliest ones did indeed have clear plungers.  I think 51 is when that ended.

Steve Hilsz and I went to the show, we try to make it every year. This was the best So Cal show I have been to in 5 years. Thanks to Gary and Remco, for hosting the show.   Looking forward to next year.

Flea Market/Yard Sale/Antique Store/Thrift Store Finds / 1950 WE 500
Last post by Vern P - April 10, 2024, 01:39:41 AM
Wale visiting in West Texas, I found a WE 1950 500 with dial blank, all date matching, for $32 !  The collector we were visiting has a date matching 1950 500, with dial. The odd part is, it has "clear" plungers.  The way it felt and looks, it has never been opened.   Sorry I don't remember how to post pictures on here.

Flea Market/Yard Sale/Antique Store/Thrift Store Finds / Pink WE 5302
Last post by Vern P - April 10, 2024, 01:29:09 AM
On my way back home from the So Cal show on 3-24, I was shopping in Prescott, AZ, in a mall I found a WE 5302 in Pink, near mint ! This is the only colored 5302 I have found in the "wild" in almost 40 years of collecting.   As you may remember I collect my "odd stuff" in pink.  Thinking I would never find a pink 5302, I made a "space holder" one, using a #7 dial and bezel.   I paid about the same price a good pink 500 would sell retail for.
Sorry, I forgot how to add pictures here.  Please help me remember.
