Started my first phone project in my new phone room. I had a beat up old D mount manual phone sitting around for a while. I dug it out and took it apart about a week and a half ago. Gave it to my painter and got it back today. Looks great! I intend to add a dial to it. I will keep this post updated as I progress. Sorry, no before pctures, I always forget those :o
Also I made a tool for removal of the nut that hold the body together from an old socket.

The paint does look nice.
Good work on that tool, too!
What did you use to cut it down?

HarrySmith

Thanks.
I work at a Toyota dealership so I have access to air tools. I used an air powered cut off tool with a 3 inch wheel. I cut a little too much on one ear but I think it will be fine. If not I can cut it again.

I made some progress on it today. Found a dial for it. Got it back together with the dial. Next is wiring it up and recovering the bottom.

It is done! I actually decided to do most of the wiring last night. Who needs sleep? Finished it up this morning. It works great. New cover on the base and ready to go.

Very nice.  :)

What did you use to punch the holes into the new baseplate fabric?

Thanks guys. I bought the base fabric precut & prepunched at the Mailtland phone show a few years back. I got some for B, D & candlesticks just so I had it when needed. I know it is not perfectly lined up but I feel it is close enough.

I will be listing it for sale soon. Anyone interested make an offer before then.
I have a bit of money in it. The cost of the phone, the subset, the new cords, the base leather and painting.

A lot of collectors use these.
They are from Harbor Freight.

Thanks for the info. I will look for this or similar set online. From the set, which size hole punch is correct for this D1 baseplate?

Looking at my D2 desk stand I'd suggest 10 mm or 3/8".
Here's what I made for a 20AL candlestick. The holes are bigger, but so are the recesses in the metal plate. And I used the smallest punch I had ;-)
The cloth is upholstery fabric, not 100% correct but -again- what I had and it does not look bad at all.

I think 3/8".
The set sells for about $10.00.
