Title: What did I find here?
Post by: countryman on July 28, 2021, 03:19:37 PM
Sure looks like 2 classic American phones. Bidding on eBay was kinda slow and I won them both on my tight budget  8)
Please educate me, what can I expect in the mail the next couple of days?

The upper one is an Automatic Electric model 50 wall phone.

Western Electric D1 desk phone, needs a subset. Could be wired as a 101 or 102.

Thanks guys, that's what I expected. I'm excited to inspect them when they arrive. You don't find both phones very often here in Germany. So keep your fingers crossed there won't be too many missing parts besides the notorious dial centers...
I guess I can improvise a subset from parts I have.

OOPS! Thanks for catching that.

Good finds and two nice additions to your collection. Do you have an auction link?

Looking forward to seeing more photos when they arrive.

The seller has some more "stuff", including a mottled brown thing what I assume is a French military intermediate phone? https://www.ebay.de/itm/203536863126 (https://www.ebay.de/itm/203536863126) Not sure if I'm interested in it.

If that brown one was in better shape, maybe...
But with a missing transmitter and cap, a broken finger wheel,
AND most of the switch tops broken off, good luck doing much with it. :(

Back in 2018 I restored one of those 'walnut burr' colour telephones. Came up nicely, but everything was present and intact. In my experience those finger wheels are often broken or the dial replaced with the later clear fingerwheel versions (as seen on the S63). I have never seen spares in the same colour.

I would pass that one by unless needed for spares itself.

Thread for the phone I restored:

Images below, first screenshot of the phone as discussed (from above auction), second set of images show the phone I restored - 'before' to left, 'after' to right.

The table phone (WE 202) works well with a home-made subset.  Mine: has a subset made of a German w48 coil, and a Norwegian ringer with capacitor. Works great!

Thanks for showing that counterpart of the brown one FABphones. What do you think was it originally? I don't think I'll go for it but it looks like an interesting phone for sure.

Thanks for the link DSK! I have the innards of a Dutch type 1955 (the bat phone) waiting for a new use. They are similar to a W48, electrically. I guess they will also work. I'm now looking for a nice case to build a subset.

Well it did Dag :-)
I ended up using a W48 coil as well. I had one on the shelf and did not need to rip up that poor Dutch wiring loom that way. And it makes a smaller package, too. Pics will follow, too dark right now.
I'm really pleased with bot phones I bought, they are complete and in good condition.

Congratulations!
I wonder how enthusiasts will be playing with their collected mobile phones when they are 50-100 year old.  :)

They might be used as toy blocks at best, but only if the batteries were removed in time.

Here are some pics of the D1. It has a vermilion stamp III/35 and a green stamp 2-49. Apparently it was refurbished an received a new 8-48 transmitter at that time.
A German transmitter capsule fits nicely into the F1 handset without any alterations. Surprisingly, as it is shaped totally different. The phone transmits and receives just fine with it. I'll clean the dial and contacts next as it still misdials, while the speed seems correct.
Last pic is my "subset". I do not need a ringer as there are plenty phones ringing where I connect it :-)
