Title: Has anyone modified a Kellogg handset using new guts?
Post by: RB on November 26, 2019, 08:16:12 AM
I have a Kellogg handset and cannot get much volume from the Rec.
I would like to update it using a newer Rec.
I have this Rec labeled 348, and think it may be an HA1 or 3 ???
Has anyone tried this?
Success???

Make sure diaphram is not bent. Try turning it over . Try another diaphram, I have put modern capsules in these handsets but they are special ones from audiosears.

I do not think those will fit. I saw some electret elements on eBay last week, they would probably work, very similar to the Audiosears Robby mentioned. You can probably find them at some electronic parts places also.

The keys to getting a good volume of sound from such a receiver are the strength of the magnet and the ability of the diaphragm to move.  If the magnet is weak or the diaphragm is bent, too tight, too loose, or too close or too far from the coils, the sound will be weak.  Check the diaphragm to make sure it isn't bent and it is not pushing against any uneven surfaces on the handset or cap.  Try flipping the diaphragm.  If the magnet is weak, you might get some improvement by adding a small magnet or two.  Small, strong magnets can be bought for cheap at hardware stores.

Try tightening or loosening the receiver cap. Some times loosening it a little makes a difference. Make sure that the faces of the magnet in the coils are clean. Also check for bad connection or cold solder joint. The receiver element in your picture is Stromberg Carlson.

Not Kellog but looking quite equal  from Elektrisk Bureau, Norway, or Siemens Germany: Cutting out rings of normal paper to make spacers to put over or under the diaphram has worked for me, once I had to put in new magnets, I used IKEA door magnets, works fine.

On an old Western Electric handset the coils was ruined so I did put in a smaller receiver, soldering and gluing, turned out to be great, another one had broken carbon diaphram on the transmitter, I had to smash a transistorized transmitter and put in, worked, but to good sound.

One more thing, had an old CB phone with extremely faint sounds.  I moved the receiver to be across the primary wingdings (in series with a capacitor) and that made the sound much better.

That is a solution used by Kellogg grabaphone and gives a strange impedance, but still it was better.
