Recently I've added a pair of interesting phones to my collection.

They are what the Germans call a model "Hildesheim" which is the first dial telephone used in Germany in a town called Hildesheim in 1908. It has a Strowger dial that was made under a license in Germany.

Mine were used in the Netherlands, they have instructions in Dutch on the dial.

They are in need of a little restoration and have a few missing parts but I already found these parts.

Can you elaborate how the dials function, is this the same manufacturer as "Strowger exchanges"?
"now this should take five minutes, where's me screwdriver went now..?"

I think it works the same as the other early Strowger telephones. I have a schematic of this phone somewhere, I'll try to find it.

Looks very much like my Strowger 11-digit wood wall phone, though much cleaner and apparently simpler wiring.

Very nice.

I just used almost the exact same model Strowger at John LaRue's museum yesterday, but it was the 11 digit mdoel. Strowger made the rotary phone because he was an undertaker. The operator of the town had a boyfriend who was the competitor's undertaker. So whenever somebody died she'd route the call to him. Almon Strowger was smart so he invented the rotary dial because it did not involve humans, so it was unbiased. He called it "secret service" because your calls were supposed to be secret.

does it work on today's telephone lines?

Phonesrfun

No, these will not work on todays lines.  At least not unless modified, which I think would not be wise.
