Title: SA 19: Stromberg Carlson Oil Can Candlestick - Ended 03-18-20
Post by: TelePlay on March 11, 2020, 07:58:42 AM
New and not so new forum members are very welcome and encouraged to take a guess. There are no wrong guesses, just one lucky guess. No one knows the winning bid on any auction until it ends. However, it is important to get your guess in before someone else grabs your guess. New guesses must be at least $20 away from any prior guess.

Everyone is entitled to one (1) guess revision as long as it is posted in a reply at least 24 hours prior to the eBay auction ending.

Thanks to Pourme for the eBay link:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/114143741792

This is starting as a "special rules" no winner contest, the best guesser will not be included in the CRPF Auction Contest Hall of Fame or be counted in the CRPF Contest Standings as a win. This one is just for fun, the best guesser will take a place in the Special Auction Contest Standings (http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=13212.msg138775#msg138775).

Glad to help, John. I'm always interested when one of these crosses the block. This one is identical to mine but, in much better condition.

It would deserve $1,800.00

Can I post a question rather than a guess?

Is there any appreciable difference in value between this 1903 version and the earlier 1900 ball type?

Thanks
Jack

I think the early versions of phones typically go for more. Also, the cooler look will typically go for more.

I think this photo shows the ball style.
It is earlier and cooler so it probably goes for more.

The photo is from this site:

Thanks Jim, I would have thought so but they don't sell often enough for me to get a handle on relative value.

I have done a lot of looking at catalogues, press releases and industry journals and I believe the date of 1898 in incorrect. The ball version was released in 1900 and the later model in 1903. Both versions are listed in Doomers' book with a date of 1898, the ball version belonged to Dan Golden. In response to me asking how he arrived at his dates he said "good question". He offered no further information.

I think 1898 was an early estimate that turned out to be wrong - these things happen. Back then there was no Google Books or Archive.org.

Regards
Jack
