My wife was cured in part from chronic back pain using several non-traditional "alternative" therapies, sometimes referred to as energy healing or mind-body therapies that might be of some help in this case -- if the person is receptive.
Have her check out the local availability of things like Reiki or Tong Ren. Many hospitals in our area offer these, often using volunteers so there is no additional cost. In many parts of the country Reiki practitioners can be found who will give treatments for a fee. If there's no local Tong Ren, they also work over the phone and internet (!!). See:

At first glance, they look like voodoo, but are worth a try. They have both helped us when western medicine gave up.
