:)this is my 1949 western electric 302 that i bought on ebay last november. it has a black cloth handset cord on it. it is by far my favorite phone out of my collection.
The Model 302 is what got me going in this hobby, and it is still my favourite.
I know the 500's are supposed to be better, but there's just something about the 302.
Something other than they're just easier to work on!
:-)
this a photo of my 685 subset that i converted from an old model 500
these are my model 554s. the photos are posted below. the black on is one the first in my collection and is my full service phone. it is hanging in my kitchen. :)
Those are nice, I definitely need to stock up on some 554's, I only have two or three.
westernelectricben, what color are yours, and do you have photos of them?

1970's colors, harvest gold and avacado green.
unfortunatly i will be taking my 302 out of service because the re furbishing of my 500 is almost done, that is one of my full service phones.
Thats a very nice one, I like the straight line cord.
I just won a mettle 302 for 33 dollars on eBay!
westernelectricben, thankyou for the complement on my 302. the straightline cord came from none other then taylorae. lol, you are lucky to have a mettle 302 they worth more money(i think)mine came from ebay as well and i think i remember paying about the same as you did for your.it needed a little work , but not much, and it got polished.
from now on when i post photos of my phones out of my collection, i will post them in this topic instead of several differnet ones. starting off with my western electric 5302,and my stromberg and carlson trimline from the late 60s or the early 70s. photos below.
I like the color of the trimline!
i am going to add photo of my 500s one at a time. i have posted about this phone before, but this phone was supposed to have been on the andy griffiths show, it is pictured below with the coa, however i still doubt its authenticity.
next up is my blue model 500 from 1973.
this phone is my only 2500 from the late 1970s.
this photo is of my mickey mouse phone. it has the at&t red trimline handset. this phone is out of the early 1990s.
this is another 500 that i refurbished and resold on ebay. photo below.

Do you want me to Merge your 554 and 302 topics on this board into this topic SouthernPhoneMan? When topics are merged they do go in date order so that is how the new topic would look but you can still edit any of your posts and pictures afterwards.
The trimline looks like Nortel's CafeAuLait color. I don't know if WECo had that color as well though.
Terry
I believe the Slenderet is Harvest Gold, not café au lait. ITT and SC changed from yellow to harvest gold, dark red to bright red, and maybe some others.
AE has a Harvest Gold in Stylelines but their version of this color would be called Desert Sand. Geezz, no coordination between competitors at all....
Terry
i am about to do another phone refurb. sorry this but i can t post photos because my camera needs batteries. i will show the final product though. the phone will be an aqua blue western electric model 500 from 1973. just realized i have a photo of this phone,so, here it is.
There you go southernphoneman, all three of your collection topics are together here now. We expect to see more...soon.... :)

here is an update on the aqua blue 500 being refurbed. the phone has been gutted and I am getting ready to clean the plastics. no finger wheel to repaint this time folks, unlike the last 500 I refurbed.anyway here is the photo. update on the refurbishment of this phone. not much to tell but I have wire brushed the tarnish of the bells(see photo),and started to clean the contacts. MORE LATER.
next up in my collection is my western electric 202 with its f1 handset and its model 685 subset
this next phone is not vintage at all but was given to me by parents when they came back from great Britain visiting relatives.i had to change to the cord to a modular connector used in the usa.
up next is my green western electric 500 from 1967
now it is time for my Stromberg and Carlson model 500 from 1979
now posted is my western electric beige 500 with a g6 handset. it is from 1959.
update on my aqua blue 500. just started soaking the handset cord and will wash plastics later.
another phone from my collection. this a duck phone from the early 1980s,it still works and the l.e.d. lights still light up when it rings.
as you all can see by now I love model 500s.next up is a model 500 from 1955. it has the soft plastic and the black finger wheel.
and again a black model 500 from 1959. soft plasctic black plungers, and black finger wheel.
hey, guess what? it is time for another black 500.this the last one to post. this one is a full service phone from 1954.

202 metals have been painted and went in the oven.photos may forthcoming.metals just came out of the oven./now the 202 is back together and tested photos below.
the refurbishment of the 1973 aqua blue western electric 500 is complete. photos below.
ALLRIGHT, which phone should I refurbish next? the choice is between my 302 and one my 500s(the phone claimed to be the andy Griffith phone(and I still doubt that it is). if a few of you could respond to this question, maybe I can make up my mind.... thank you.
Who are you trying to fool! You will have them both done before we help you decide.
A kink snuck back into your blue handset cord about 5 or 6 coils from the base. You should be able to twist it out without any trouble.

thanks for noticing the kink in the blue cord, and you are probably right about having both of the phones done, because once I start one of the projects I can t stop, I guess because I enjoy it so much.... thanks again terry. ;)
:) this phone is the latest addition to my collection. it is a 1957 western electric model 500, it was refurbed by the seller off of ebay.

Hmmm. That's interesting. I've always felt the 302's were easier than the 500's.

sorry nothing to update on the 302 right now I haven t worked on it since Saturday, but I will get back to it and update it again very soon.
I should have posted this before. I will be adding a Stromberg and Carlson white 500 to my collection, I bought from forum member harry smith and can be seen on his topic in the classified section of this forum.once I receive this phone I will update this reply with photos.

I made an attempt at refurbishing and it did not go well, so I have stopped trying to fix it and may consider sending it out to dennis mc Donald of a1telephones :-\, but I am not sure.
sorry folks about taking down the photos of the 302 refurb but it did not go well and in the end I tried a topic on it and it did not go far at ALL so I have put the phone cover back on and it now sits on the shelf. even if I am able to fix it I probably won t post it, I am a little embarrassed about it and ashamed of the whole experience .now a closed issue and time to move on.

WHOOPS, Lets reopen it for 1 last consideration:
I am a little confused why you are embarrassed for trying and not immediately succeeding . This is the typical experience for most people when attempting something new. It is called Life, might as well face it head-on and try your best over and over again, with each experience you gain a bit more of the upper hand, before long you are the one offering advice.
Instant Gratification is only in video games.

Don't give up!
finally bought payphone,no photo yet. ebay item number 281097645186. :)
Nice! It looks like a good deal to me. ;D
Mo
That's certainly cheap, but I have a feeling you're going to have a fun time trying to get into it. We just bought a green 1A1 payphone that doesn't have keys. I'm thinking I can probably get an upper key to fit it, but there's no chance of finding a vault key. I think the only option is to cut the vault door off.
---Eric
Certainly inexpensive enough! I wonder what they mean when they say "phone has no front cover"? The one pictured does unless they are referring to the lack of instruction cards on the cover.
Terry
They could be referring to the missing vault door. So the only key needed is the correct 29A or 29B key for the upper housing. Different Bell companies used different 29A keys, depending on the geographical location. I don't know how many different 29B keys there are--the 29B locks were used on phones sold to others.
Oh that is probably it, the vault door. That should be easy to get.
Terry
As already mentioned 29A keys were used by the Regional Bell companies.
There are about 100-different key combinations since each Bell company often used several different combinations within their territory, often divided into separate parts of the states and large cities they served.
Thus, 29A L-27, was used by Pacific Telephone to serve Northern California while another list number was used for Southern Cal. Their Nevada Bell subsidiary used yet another list number key.
NyTel's New York City had several list numbers assigned to the various boroughs as well as others that were used throughout the rest of the state.
29B keys had thousands of different combinations and corresponding list numbers since they were furnished to many different CoCots rather than telcos.
In the instance of the pay telephone in the eBay auction, it may be a crap-shoot as to whether you can find the right key on the first try if the number card with the area code and prefix is missing. Otherwise it should be rather easy to order the proper key.
Something does appear to be rather hokey since they state these phones were acquired at a government auction. How did a government body acquire and auction telephones belonging to a telephone company? And why would a government body remove the instructions cards, especially since most public employees would not know how to remove them. Someone must have had access to the coin box keys to remove the vault doors. It is also strange that they did not remove the upper-housing locks before they auctioned them.
Just my 2-cents worth!
There are other posts either here or on the TCI or ATCA listserves that discuss how to loosen the lock screws without drilling the lock.
BellSouth got out of the pay phone business and sold all 140,000 pay phones to a scrap company in Alabama. (The owner sells things like BellSouth olympic vault doors on Ebay.)
Before BellSouth removed all their pay phones, the State of Georgia purchased already installed pay phones (SIP---sold in place) that previously had been owned and operated by BellSouth. These had the smart boards in them. The State paid a company to reprogram them so that they would work on Centrex lines with no money required.
I can't remember now about the upper locks. I think that the vault doors had been removed since the calls were free. (It is a tariff violation to charge for calls from Centrex lines.) I know we had to get inside them to swap out the handsets. The armored cords were supposed to withstand 400 lbs. of pulling on them, but the mental patients just twisted the handsets until the cords broke. (Then they complained about not having a working phone.)
newest phone to my collection.just bought it . model 4120 wooden rotary wall phone.

just bought this beautiful yellow western electric 500 from magicmo through ebay.ITEM number 300915121805,photos when I receive it. was able to get this photo from the add.
Here's a couple of the eBay pics. Looks like the heart of this one is a '58, refurbed with the late small round feet and modularized. Sometimes I wonder what a Bell-refurbished phone was originally. Certainly this one's original housing was soft plastic, whatever color it was.
(http://i.ebayimg.com/t/Bell-System-Western-Electric-500-DM-marked-2-79-and-2-58-w-G3-handset-/00/s/NjQwWDQ4MA==/z/SXoAAMXQXTZRfDRV/$(KGrHqZ,!lgFELN,mKorBRfDRVYQ5Q~~60_3.JPG)

No way to know what color this one was originally, because the original dial has been replaced.
When you find a remanufactured 500 with an old 7C or 7D dial--even if it has the newer type finger wheel---check the back of the dial. If the date on the dial matches the ringer date and/or network date, then the dial is probably original to the phone, even if it is now a different color. All 7-type dials, as well as the early 9Cs, have the original color indicated.
For example: 7D-3 8-55 was originally a black dial in 1955. 7C-56 9-62 was originally yellow in 1962. 9C-53 3-66 was originally red in 1966.
just received the phone today and it has a 9CA-10/75
just won these 2 phones from an auction on ebay

$47.00, thank you, Gregg
oh its a good price for this red phone :) thanks you for the response.
Hi, I just bought my first ever automatic electric telephone pictured below, and also there is a photo of the base, can someone tell me what the black numbers represent, thankyou, Gregg.
Very nice, love those AE 40's. I only have one myself, that still needs for me to finish restoring it.
How much was it? I really like that number card, very stylish. (just like these phones)

thank you Ben, it was 49 dollars and change, I wasn t a big fan of AE phone until lately when they started to grow on me, and I don t even know if I paid to much or not, on ebay there price varied from 25 dollars to over 1000 dollars, Gregg
I am not the price master for phones but I would say you got a pretty good deal!
I'm not a big fan on the AE's either.. Though, some I think look really cool and some like the 80E look too blocky and ugly.
Ben
here is my first 2 tones 500 won on ebay a few minuts ago, Gregg
Very cool, I am still yet to buy one. Though, I did just pick up a 1964 yellow phone.
Ben
What's the difference between ' Automatic Électric phone and the other .?. excuse my ignorance ;)
Gregg,
I'm sure you already thought this through, but you might want to sand down the bottom of the AE 40 where it is rusty. If you have a dremel you can buy a bit that will work well grinding down the rust.
Ben
Cool.
I had to do the same with my AE 40, just add a line cord. Though, I just cannot find a good way to shine it.

Ben, thank you for your compliment,
and contempra, the difference I believe that western electric and automatic electric are just 2 companies who made beautiful telephones for the bell system, Gregg
In most cases Bell companies in the U.S.--at least for most of the 20th century--used Western Electric phones, Bell Canada used Northern Electric. Automatic Electric phones were seldom used by the Bell System; rather they were used by independents.
Very nice, I was looking at that, but I didn't have the funds.
That pink one looks especially nice.
Ben
Nice haul ;D Works out to around $12.50 per phone, not bad. That is some line cord on the Pink one! A little polish and put them back on eBay for twice as much :o
Did you get the two-tone 500 yet? Is it original?
Oh well, nice try. Looks like you got some two-tone possibilties in this new group. Green and white? Brown & white? ;D
Nice lot of fun (phone) :D.. now I think about the shipping... ;)

Lucky man.........FREE shipping....
Nice piece Gregg, this phone has a modular plug ? I don,t know this sort of phone.
it looks like an old 554 wall phone with push button if i'm not wrong..correct me;)
Western Electric, ITT and Stromberg-Carlson 2554s are sometimes called "Mini-Wall." They are actually closer to the design of a Princess than to a 554. The first WE 1554s (10-button Touch-Tone) used the same M1A ringer and 4010 network developed for the Princess. Both these parts are smaller than the C4 ringer and 425 network found in a 554.
S-C and ITT made a rotary version of the Mini-Wall, but WE did not. NE/NT never made any Mini-Walls. Northern Electric/Northern Telecom 2554 uses the same chassis as a 554. ITT and S-C also made a large version Touch-Tone wall phone similar to the NE/NT 2554, but used a different code number such as 3554.
I've never seen one with my eyes, that's why i asked if i'm wrong David ;).. Thank you very much Gregg and David
Here is a western electric 202 that I just bought from our good friend Doug Rose, it is a manual and it will have a rotary added to it and will be restored. parts of the purchase included a 534 subset also shown here.after restoration I will post another photo of it, Gregg
Gregg.....Merry Christmas ....many thanks...Doug

Here is a recent purchase, and this type of 500,labled a 500 T as seen in the 1st photo from 4/52 which is all original but the handset cord had to be replaced.
Hey !,.. looks like mine Gregg :)..
Nice one PVT.. If i'm not wrong , just a missing piece to add on the dial and it'll be complete at first glance ;)
