Well this is turning into an interesting phone, it's definitely not a standard phone...

So far the things I've found:

  • The brand, Storno made/sold radios and radiotelephones, I've so far not found anything to do with this phone that they offered as standard.
  • The wiring, the receiver is wired directly to the line cable, and the transmitter runs via the hookswitch, and is wired directly to the line cable too, cutting out the rest of the phone including the dial and ringer.
  • The phone is adapted to make it seemingly insect or moisture proof (possibly explosion proof too), with foam around the base of the shell, taped up entry points on the base (holes normally used for Planset mounting, wall mounting and external accessories like a watch receiver).
  • The dial is an all-plastic "extra cheap" model, with part of the model & date numbers scraped off, presumably an MOD thing incase it fell into enemy hands and they learn their secrets... ;D

I'm not sure if it has a 4kOhm or 1kOhm ringer (haven't measured it yet), but I'm not sure whether to rewire it to work as a standard 746, or leave as-is while I try and figure out what it used to work with, but for now, I need to give it a wash, but before that, the pictures... :)

6 more pics...

And the last two (delayed cos a CFL just blew in my lamp!!), these two show the wiring and the rather oddly crimped line cable ends... ;D

It is an intriguing phone.

Love that aluminium dial "card" .

These crimped ends look like normal crimped spades, but with the spades broken off, leaving the crimped end.

Very nice. I have to agree, those wires have had the spades cut off for some strange reason. That is the cheapest looking dial I have ever seen ;D

Funnily enough the dial badge card thing is just a bit too thick for the dial centre to sit flush, so it's easy to pull it off without using the usual methods of using something sticky... ;D

Looking closely at the snipped spades though, they appear to be pretty crudely fitted and soldered (either to hold the wires in place or to solder them to something), but whatever happened to them, they're pretty messed up... ???

And these No. 54 Dials are rubbish, the 8746 that I bought with the Storno has one aswell, and taking the thing apart and reassembling it is a real pain, literally, re-winding the return spring I just about tore skin off my fingers holding the thing back from spring detonation, as they removed the screw the older dials have to wind and unwind and replaced with with a fixed plastic tab, and where the screws went in looked like they're starting to split, so, these are very disposable dials, cos if they break, in the bin they go... ::)

Well, I decided to re-wire the Stornophone to work as a standard unconverted 746 (1kOhm ringer and all), and it works perfectly, though the plastic dial had to be lubed up as it was a bit slow and jerky, but works nicely despite being cheaply built... :)

Still makes me wonder what it was used for before it was taken out of service, or what happened between then and my getting it, but it's one of them mysteries of life I guess... ;D

I really dislike those late, all-plastic GPO dials  :P

I'm not keen on them, but this dial seems to be in little-used condition, so with some oil in the right place it's doing it's job... :)

I do need to replace the foam seal round the inside of the base though, it disintegrated when I was converting it, so I peeled off the sticky bit just to stop any more foam crumbles coming loose inside the phone...

I wonder if a Freedom of Information Act request to the MOD about the purpose or use of this item (giving the NATO stock number) would produce any information?

I think that the NSN probably covers a lot of phones like this, so knowing what it did in it's former life is like asking, say, what all the ford escorts built in 1984 did through their life, only generic answers would be available, plus I think there's time-related rule with MOD stuff when it comes to FOI act requests, meaning they don't de-classify stuff until after a stupidly long time...
