glad to hear you've cracked it, eric............... i have 3 500s with open f/wheels + i always approach them with caution.  the british system on the gpo 700s was simple and effective - sellotape + a screwdriver..........

On the older colour 700 series fingerwheels, you had to push a clip under the wheel to lift the number card window as the sellotape, or even the proper rubber sucker tool, wouldn't shift it...  :D

There's also one that looks like a ball-point pen.

I have seen many of these captioned, depicted, and advertised as a 'dial-spudger (tool)'

Here's a couple quick results for "dial spudger" from Google:

I hope this helps all with finger wheel removal; I know I'm going to get a couple... ;)

(I have a 9/56 Aqua 500 that needs a new finger wheel. Anybody have a spare they'd part with?)

Best regards,

Terrence

As an FYI, some time back this subject came up and the pin vise was suggested as a good tool to have.

They are still available at

The idea was to put the chosen drill in the vise backwards to use as a removal tool.

The two advantages of this pin vise was the variety of drill diameters for different sized finger wheel holes and having the very small drills if needed.
