Well, it is not rare and it is not antique. Vintage at best, maybe. It is asian, made in the 70ies - 90ies or there abouts.

Cheaply made. The price is high, but some people love them.

I often get asked to repair one.

I have seen those, you 3 hands to use it, 1 for holding the handset, one for dialling, and one for supporting it to keep it stable.

I forget the name of the companies but there are at least two "novelty" telephone catalogs in the TCI Library showing this type of telephone.

Catalogs from METROPOLITAN TELETRONICS and GRANDCOM listed this model of novelty telephone and apparently was uploaded to the TCI List but did not make it into the Library.

Yes, I wonder why.

;)

Please do let us know just what it is that you are you wondering about, afterall, inquiring minds want to know;-)

I was wondering why the catalogue with the pole phone didn't make the library. But apparantly the intended irony of my question didn't come across quite well.

I have no idea as to why the catalogs did not make it into the library but I doubt it was because of any nefarious intent.

My best guess would be that these types of telephones are considered to be "garbage" by most established collectors
so they were not included, but as I have said, it is only a guess.

The Antique store down the street from my house has 3 of them, they are all under $50.

There's good background info with photos here:

Some info that was passed along on the TCI list was not added to the Library during a few months when it was being rebuilt following a hacker attack.

If anyone has documents from that period (including on repro and novelty phones) that should be in the Library, please email them to me or post here with a note and I'll see that they are added.

We're looking for volunteers for several Library projects, including combing the TCI list archives for that period looking for things we missed.  Many can be done by simply surfing the list and Library and are under no time constraints.  All help is welcome.  PM or email privately if interested.

If you're a frequent user of the Library, volunteering to help is a good way to "pay it forward."

I agree with the last photo's title.... junk.

Why, oh why do people even think these are either rare or antiques?

Here's a similar phone and something I've not seen before, how they ship them.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/141193295416

It's a (seller listed) "Vintage PEDESTAL Style BRASS and MARBLE TELEPHONE Stand" starting in a 7 day auction at $9.99 plus $38.16 Economy Shipping.

It always amazes me at how sellers think out of focus pictures will help sell their items for real money. Seller describes it as "Vintage Pedestal Brass and Marble Standing Telephone. Late 70s - early 80s. Made of brass, marble, metal and plastic. Approximately 38" tall The pole is about 3.5" diameter and the base is about 9" diameter. Missing the handset handle (see stock photo #10). Weights 16 lbs. Was stored in its original foam packing. New old stock. Needs cleaning. No guarantee if working or not. Sold "as is""

Okay, it's NOS but needs cleaning and is "missing" the handset handle. Really? Photo #10 (PF2 below) seems complete to me. Anyway, I doubt it will sell but one never knows at that price. Price is good for a novelty piece but shipping is a killer.
