Hey!  That looks just like my red phone!  I'll describe it to you, it's red, old, has a curly cord thingie, and is, uh, red.  So you can just drop it in Santa's sack when he comes to your place and he will return it right away to it's proper place.

Oh, wait, I just remembered that I don't have a red phone.

Bummer.

That's a great looking setup on the desk!  Brings a smile to the face.

I'm not a religious person D/P, but I certainly wish everyone a happy holiday (Christmas, new years, Hanukkah, etc) season.  It can often be a difficult time of the year, loaded as it is with pretty high expectations for family and friend relationships which may not be what we wish they were.  This forum remains a nice example of how we can all get along, it's one of my favorite online places to hang out.

So in the words of the famous poem:

"Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!"

I am open and willing to discuss  the interesting revolutionary differences between Dutch and other European telephones from the last mid-century. HEEMAF and PTT.

Otherwise I agree with Bill:

Matt:

Everyone mispells my name.  I am pretty used to it.  In fact, at work, I have about 4 different aliases set up on the e-mail system so I get my e-mail.  The actual spelling is Geurts (It's Dutch), but I routinely see Guerts, Gurtz. Geurtz Guertz, and those are just the more common versions.  It is definitely not an intuitive spelling, so it does not offend me at all when it gets mispelled.  Usually I am happy enough that people remember me the person, regardless of spelling.

-Bill Guertz

Bill, I thought it was just me.  I have caught myself misspelling it a couple of times.  And there were probably a couple of times I didn't catch myself and spelled it incorrectly.  It's not that difficult but I flip-flop the u and e nearly every time.

I spent my life responding when people call me Mark.  It's because of my last name.  Even friends I have had for years will accidentally call me Mark.  From my earliest grade school memories, people called me Mark.  Not as a nick name or anything, just like, see ya later Mark. :)

I have incorrectly spelled mienaichizu while having it right in front of me.     DSK, that is a very beautiful view. Your veranda looks like the place I'd like to have my morning coffee, for the rest of my life.
It's really something for me to be here in my tiny little town of barely over 3,000 people in southern Louisiana and get merry christmas greetings not only from all over the U.S., but from places like the Philippines, London, and Norway. All I can say is wow.

I wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and may the new year bring plenty of rotary phones to you. I've posted this picture before, but it bears repeating. Here's what you can do with all those pesky promotional keychains. There are Princesses, 500s and Trimlines on there. Yes, it's a bit tacky, but it gets the job done. The phone is one of my favorites, a dark gray with a black dial, from 1954. Most of my guests notice the tree and not the phone.

Also, this is the time of year to count your blessings. Remember those who may be having a rough time this year and give something to your favorite charity or donate your time to a worthy cause.

I like your "tacky" and "retro" Xmas tree too, Jonathan. That's what I should do next Xmas when I'm living in my 1954 classic trailer: Get an artificial tree. It will fit right in with my somewhat "tacky" 1950s trailer motif, in a good way. I don't use real trees anymore because of the fire hazard and all the fir needles everywhere. Those pesky needles and tree pitch could really mess up getting clogged inside a telephone... :P

And yes, everyone, count our blessings indeed. Lot's of folks having very rough times, loosing their homes, struggling for employment etc.  I almost lost my home last week until I finally found someone to lease my house and I am now downsizing by moving into my trailer. Yes, it's just a big funky (and yes, "tacky") old trailer, but it's big enough for all my needs and I'm happy in it. Plus, by leasing out my home, I'm helping someone else have a place to live. Downsize, Consolidate, Simplify one's life to the important basics that we really need to be happy. Sell all the stuff that I don't need, etc.. That's my motto for the new year. :)

When I was a kid growing up in the 50's I always wanted an aluminum Christmas tree but my folks also thought they were too tacky. I found a small 4 footer in a garage sale this summer. I finally convinced my wife I was going to put it up as long as we have a real tree to go with it. I'll try and post a pic of the tree if I have the time.

We do have a lot to be thankful for. As HobieSport mentioned a lot of people are going through tough times. I'll been working as a shipper in a manufacturing plant for the last 37 years and only working 2 days a week for the past year. Thankfully my wife has a steady job so we are getting by. I want to wish everyone a very Merry and Happy Christmas and the best in the coming year, Jiggerman
Title: Re: Merry Christmas!

Jiggerman, have you seen what those aluminum trees are bringing on eBay?  You know the ones from back in the 60's.  The aluminum trees that were merely wooden rods with holes drilled and the "branches" were then stuck in the holes. The motorized color wheel that would shine on them changed them from Green, to Red, to Yellow, or Blue or whatever color.  They go for a pretty penny these days.  They were "ultra modern" in the mid-1960's.

I will echo what others have said here too.  I'm very grateful for my family and friends, to have a roof over my head and a furnace to keep it all warm.   I make an effort to reach into my pocket each time I pass one of the bell ringers from the Salvation Army.  A little goes a long way with the work that they do.  There are many great charitable organizations that do a great job, but especially now they need our help.  For the price of a vintage Model 500 someone can have a warm meal on Christmas and into the New Year.

Here's mine.  It's a little one that my parents bought in the 1960s.  I have a six footer with a rotator and color wheel, but I don't have enough space to put it up anymore. :(

Happy Space-Age Christmas!

Ah, Xmas Memories from the 60s:

Like Dennis, as a kid circa '65, we also had a rotating color wheel. We'd put it right under the tree and let it shine up through the branches. It was a very cool effect. Even the cats were fascinated with it.

Our Xmas trees were always the real thing, and we used to make fun of the "fake" trees. (I don't anymore.) Our trees were always as big as we could get; about six feet in diameter and from floor to ceiling, even though our house was fairly small. We had a big double bed sized couch next to the tree and we would just lay there with my Mom or Dad and stare at the tree for hours. My friends and I would also stay overnight and sleep under the tree sometimes.

Just finding the trees each year was an all day adventure. The Santa Cruz and Watsonville mountains (central Calif coast) were dotted with small family Xmas tree farms, and we would drive around all day and look at every tree at every farm before we chose one and cut it ourselves. Usually it was some big neglected tree in the corner of a nice old man's tree farm, one that he had "let go" and had stopped pruning because it was too big to sell. So he'd let us have it for about 5 bucks. We'd stuff it into our van, drive it home, prune it to fit, and put it into a bucket with bricks and water to keep it fresh. We'd keep it set up for all of December.

Our whole small town (La Selva Beach) looked great during Xmas. Down the center islands of our double main street were, and still are, large 75 foot high Port Orford cedars, and every year the fire department hangs them with the big old fashioned colored lights. A lot of people lit their houses, too. So almost every frosty evening in December we would talk walks with the whole family and friends all around town and just enjoy it all.

Ya know, I miss all those cheery lights. I might just have to turn into one of those "redneck trailer trash" folks who keep a few Xmas lights year round... ;)

I'm going to send out a Merry Christmas one more time.  This time circa April 1955.

I had some time to spare and thought I'd take a Christmas photo of an old favorite and a new favorite.....this week anyway.

The manufacture date on the green is 4-12-55 and the red 4-19-55.

Hey there you-all!   :)  Merry Christmas and everything else from New England.  My house smells like apples - fritters for breakfast, then I made a big apple pudding for tomorrow's party.  Just two of us here tonight - #2 daughter went to work at the hospital evening shift, and the other one has flown the coop and begun the alternating family-holiday dance.

We get our tree from a 101-year-old farmer; she sells the taller ones for cheaper as a way of keeping the stock shorter.  I don't think she does any pruning or trimming.  We wander around the field looking at the tops of the 20 - 30 foot trees, trying to figure out which one looks good in the top 6 to 8'.  Then we cut it down, cut off the good part and demolish the rest.  This year our perceptions were off - it is very lop-sided.  But beautiful nonetheless, with the red and sparkle ornaments my Dad brought home around 1967, and the basket my sister wove of grass in 1972, and the little polar bear with backpack that Gillian made and sent from Alaska in 1986, and so on...

I am buying a couple of older push-buttons phones for my office, because no-one there seems to mind the modern crappy reception.  I would go for dial, but that might get vetoed.

Best wishes to all and a much better next year than this one to everyone!!

Here is my wish for the world, as painted by me a few years ago.

Here's a photo of my retro Christmas tree with revolving wheel. I also have the rotating base but was nowhere to be found. I got up extra early Christmas morning searching for it but to no avail. Funny thing, I did find two phones in the shed that I didn't know I had. Probably found these in a yard sale before I started collecting phones. One was a 1960 pink Princess and a 1953 moss green WE 500. I'll post a few pics later if I have time. Jiggerman

Merry Christmas to all from Virginia!  We're going to get a little snow, but not nearly as much as a lot of you are getting or have had.  All in all, I'd rather be in Lillehammer. What a beautiful place.

I got an AppleTV that I can't get to work.  Don't you love it when you get some fancy gizmo and then have to spend several frustrating days working all the problems out?  Ughh. Some good old Bell System-style reliability wouldn't go amiss in today's products.

I wasn't sure if we should carry on with last years "Merry Christmas" thread or have a brand new one for this year. A little research shows that there has been a seperate thread each year since 2008 so I've started a new one for 2011 and included links to the last three years just in case anyone wants to start at the very beginning!

So..from Vancouver Canada, I hope everyone has a fantastic Christmas holiday and all the best for 2012!

Terry

<edit> Later on I wound up merging all the Christmas threads into one running thread like the other holiday threads on CRPF      Terry

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to everyone on the Forum. I hope you have a nice, warm place to celebrate the holidays with family and friends.

Below is the picture I used on my Christmas card this year. It was taken in December, 2010, early on the 26th before the sun was all the way up. We had four inches of snow in North Carolina on Christmas evening, which was incredible. It piled up on the tree branches big time. For the first time ever, Christmas at my grandmother's basement (now my aunt's) was rescheduled for New Year's Day.

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to everyone from The Great Lakes State.  dsk that telegram is pretty cool.  Thanks for posting that.

No snow on the ground here.  It's a breezy 43 degrees.  I just returned from a trip to Marco Island, Florida where it was a balmy 80+ degrees each day.

Jonathan, your photo is beautiful.  What a contrasting picture.  The blue hue to the snow scene gives one the feeling of the cold while the Christmas tree adds a warm, cozy feeling.  Great shot!

Below are my somewhat recently acquired Model 302's.  Both have Tenite housings.  The Red housing is dated from January of 1955.  I don't recall the housing date on the Green one.    The second photo I posted originally in 2009.  A couple more of my Red/Green favorites.

It's getting closer....10 days and counting. I think all the plans are made and confirmed here now. Where Christmas eve takes place and where Christmas day's activities happen is a rotational thing here for us. Way back when there was a pretty much set rotation but in more recent years it keeps getting adjusted by various outside factors.

This year we are having Christmas Day at my In-laws who live in Point Roberts WA, about a 1 hour drive for us to the foreign country. So we decided we may as well have Christmas Eve at our cabin which is also at Point Roberts. Who can and can not attend on each of the days is all worked out so nothing left now but the count down.

Merry Christmas and a Happy 2013 from the Netherlands.

The picture shows a train of the Pike's Peak Cog Railway - The world's highest cog railroad, the highest Colorado railroad AND highest train in the United States at 14.110 ft - 4300 m above sea level. The Manitou and Pike's Peak Railway is an Abt rack system cog railway in Colorado, USA, climbing the well-known mountain Pikes Peak. The base station is in Manitou Springs, Colorado near Colorado Springs. It was one of the highlights of my last trip to the US together with my dad.

While we were near Colorado Springs we also had the pleasure to visit Jim S. and admired his collection of transparent phones.

A Merry Christmas morning to all. I don't see anything which rings, but I do see all sorts of toys for the  cats; enough to bring them days of enjoyment. Now that my son is grown up and living away, it is a pleasure watching them at opening time. It isn't a matter of receiving, now, I find it more fun giving, and they are the natural recipients!

My son and his lady visited last night for Christmas Eve Supper, and I gave him a couple of little presents for his Raspberry PI - more to come when they come down next!

So, I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas day - the best thing about Christmas are families getting together and smiles on the children's faces, and don't forget about those wonderful Christmas dinners that put on pounds just by simply smelling them cook! Antacids are needed even before they are served ::)

Cold today (-7 c currently), but no snow to speak of. We lucked out and missed the last snow, being on the warm side of the storm. So not a completely green Christmas, but leaving great Christmas driving!

Merry Christmas to everyone from southeast Michigan.  We got our first accumulation of snow on Christmas eve.  It's not a lot but the ground is covered...perhaps a half an inch or so.  It really makes it feel like Christmas.

I hope whatever you're doing, wherever you go you all have a great day and you're able to spend time with family and/or friends.  Hopefully Santa brought you that special phone or phone part that you've been wanting.

Have a happy, healthy and safe 2013!

Those are straight cords on those 302s.  The 500s came with a Teletrainer.  I forgot I had them till I was making space for the Christmas tree and I pulled them out of a corner.  A Christmas miracle! Except they are both duds.  The matching date 1960 in green with open faced fingerwheel is will be nice though.

Merry Christmas, the sequel.  Anita and I didn't want to do a full-size Christmas Tree this year, so we got a "mini" Blue Spruce.  The ornament on the left is a Pot of Gold.  Each year we pick out one ornament to symbolize what we hope for in the coming year.  The POG ornament was perfect.  The picture is a little fuzzy because I had to turn the flash off to get the lights to show.

In Minnesota we have quite a bit accumulated, but no big snow falls.

We had about 5-7 inches of new snow on the ground.  But yesterday it rained most of the day and night and 95% of it is gone.  We were fortunate because the freezing line was just north of us so we missed out on the ice.  That cause power outages in the areas that weren't so lucky.

The snow photo look very nice, as do the others.

Weather forecasters were predicting yesterday that Waukesha would get 3-4 inches today. My dad wasn't too happy today when he had to plow double that!

Our Christmas snow arrived just a few days to early this year so it is all gone as of yesterday. We don't always get snow over the winter in Vancouver (for example 2010 when we hosted the Winter Olympics!) but most years at some point between November and February there will be just enough to turn driving into a nightmare!

I haven't been around here quite as much as usual lately due to our globe hopping travels now that I am retired which means more travelling to come next year as well.

I hope everyone has a fantastic Christmas holiday and all the best to you all in 2014.

Terry

And lots of snow on the ground! In December so far, we have had (as of Monday) 108 cm whereas normally in December we get about 67 cm. And it hasn't stopped snowing since then! At least we missed most of the freezing rain surrounding provinces got! We often come close to having a green Christmas. Not this year!

And lots of snow on the ground! In December.

Seems we're pikers up here compared to PEI. We're sitting under 8-16" and you are on the edge f 24"+. You can see the lake effect on snow in this map, a lot more snow east of the great lakes. North Dakota, Minnesota, Michigan and Wisconsin are back to normal snowfall this year, and in time for Christmas.

It's lightly dusted with snow here, which has been frozen in place a but through the night, but I doubt the MET office will officially declare it a white christmas... ;D

I'm not a christmas person myself (I'm more of a winter solstice celebrator, which is where christmas originated), but either way it's a great day to eat heartily, celebrate family and drink some rather nice brandy (I have some here actually, quite nice stuff too!!), but, due to my seeping problems, I'm off to bed shortly, but shall be up in time for christmas dinner (I hope!!), we're having roast pork shoulder this year... :D

Anyway, enjoy your christmas day (or whichever celebration you choose), and definitely be well and truly merry by the end of the day!!! (http://www.recycleabicycle.co.uk/pics/smilies/purple.gif)

Final thought for Christmas 2013:
Christmas may be over, but not Winter!

Special weather statement for P.E.I. issued

A potential winter storm could affect the island tonight and early Friday morning. A second storm is possible for Sunday night and Monday.

A low pressure system is forecast to develop near Cape Cod this evening and intensify as it tracks across Nova Scotia overnight tonight to lie east of Cape Breton Friday morning. This system is expected to bring snow and gusty winds to most of Prince Edward Island tonight.

There is still uncertainty with respect to the track and intensity of the system. It is possible that some regions may require a snowfall warning as more than 15 centimetres of snow could fall during the overnight period tonight.

The public is advised to monitor future forecasts as warnings may be required.

A second winter storm is expected to develop over the U.S. Eastern Seaboard late Sunday and track northeastward passing near Nova Scotia on Monday. This system could bring significant snow and strong winds.

Environment Canada will continue to monitor the development of these two weather systems providing updates as new information becomes available.

Will the U.S. please keep its snow to itself? 120 cm and counting!

Dave

My wife and I are visiting one son and two grandkids.  Others in the family have kind of moved all over the place and it is hard now to see everyone at the same time!

Judging by the stuff under the tree, it will be great.

Merry Christmas from PEI! Warm, rain, 13 deg. c.

No phone presents this year, but I did get some great health news on Tuesday. I gave an NE554 and an 717GC to a young fellow beginning his collection later that day. More for him in the spring when we see how he gets along with the first ones.

This young fellow had his first introduction to antiques and old phones in the museum last fall. When he left then, I gave him an insulator. He will be back in the spring!

Guess that's what Christmas is all about. He was one very happy 6 year old!

You know 6-7 seems to e the best time to interest a child in a hobby. Just around the time my son had his seven year old birthday, I built and gave him an IBM XT clone many years ago. He became a true computer expert, building servers by the time he was 9, then the kid teachers went to for computer advice in high school, then network admin for a local ISP for seven years before going back to school so his knowledge would be documented. That he passed with the highest marks they had ever had a student get, and is now working in Ottawa as a Network Administrator.

The only sad thing about that is he is living away. We sure miss him most of the time, but HE IS HOME FOR CHRISTMAS this year!

Thank you!  Funny thing was, this story was set in the 40s, and I was glad to see the live musical version had a period-correct telephone.  I spotted a WE Space Saver on the wall.  It was used in the scene where Ralphie's mom called another mother after Ralphie said he heard the "Fudge" word from another boy.

I see all the evidence I need in the background of your picture Briny. The "ant & Cas".... is the "Elephant & Castle". We had them hear in Greater Vancouver (not sure if there are any left here now though) and they always had a GPO booth out front.

I hope everyone is having a wonderful Christmas!

Merry Christmas All!  I hope you all had a lovely, blessed Christmas.  Was nice to get back on here and read through everyone's greetings and well-wishes and humorous pictures. :)

This Stromberg-Carlson 1543 (wall version) was under the tree for me.  Apparently the word is out among the family, my brother-in-law had me for the gift exchange this year and I was quite surprised to get this.  I believe there must have been some colluding between him and my husband because this phone is a mess!  I could just hear him wrapping saying, "this outta keep her busy for awhile!"  Stamped on base: "1543G  50-"  I'm guessing 1950?  Anyway, its my first SC.  :-*

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year fellow Phone Lovers!  -Melanie

Yes it is an early soft plastic AE80 dated October 1959. From not very much earlier than this AE started dating their phones. Smells like cheese....

Unfortunately there are no dates on the Jade Green 880 Touch Call Speakerphone but its base label is missing that likely would have had the dates on it. Probably 1970 or early 70's. The 880's are one of those phones that are quite a bit more rare in Touch Call than Rotary. Like the 3 slot payphones.

Your early 500 Christmas display looks great as well Christian!

There is a train bridge at Lethbridge Alberta (used to be an AE Canada Telephone manufacturing plant at Lethbridge) called the Lethbridge High Level bridge. Picture below.

A photographer caught the Holiday (Christmas) Train on the bridge in fog this year. It has been described as a picture if Santa's Sleigh. Copies were made and sold to benefit charity. Second picture Below is best if you click on it to enlarge.

About the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train
CP's annual Holiday Train program is a rolling fundraising event that travels across Canada and the United States raising money, food, and awareness for food banks and hunger issues, hosting free holiday concerts along the way. Since 1999 the program has raised over C$12 million and 3.9 million pounds of food. Each Holiday Train is about 1,000 feet in length with 14 rail cars decorated with hundreds of thousands of technology-leading LED lights and a modified boxcar that has been turned into a traveling stage for performers.

A followup to my post (pg 15 - reply 217) about the CPR Christmas Train.

After reading the Christmas posts today, noticed the one just above DavePEI's which was Terry's about the CP Christmas Train. Googled it 2016 route and stops about 1 pm to find it was coming through my area at 5:40 pm - not cutting that close, was I?

Got to a good spot about 5:10, the second car there. The train was late (anyone ever know of a train to be on schedule?). Came through about 6:20. I was about 30 feet from the tracks as it flew by (had to make up time in the schedule, I guess), but it was worth the 45  minute wait on a dark, windy 26 degree F night.

A very nice thing to see. They do it well and nothing spared on the decoration lighting. It looks much better in person and had I had more time to scout out spots, I would have picked one over an open field and at a distance, I was too close.

Ahh, you made it! CP (Canadian Pacific) doesn't have much track in the US (though they were recently trying to obtain at lot more) so that is great that it came by close enough for you to go see it.

I should have had you toss a box of extra phones and stuff onboard as the Christmas Train will be here only about 5 miles from me on December 17.

We don't do "milk and cookies" in the UK.

Glass of sherry for Santa and a carrot for Rudolph are the usual offerings.

I have already posted our personal Christmas greeting, but I was going to go over to the Museum today to get a photo of my NE QSD-3A green payphone dressed for Christmas as we used to do before I started the Museum. Alas, I messed up my knee again this morning, and with the ice between here and the museum, decided a change of plans was in order. So, there is my N-1317 phone which we have in the house dressed for Christmas.

The phone has the proper NE MD-2127 conversion to a handset phone as was done many years ago to many of these by the telephone company to provide a more modern feel to their customers. The old transmitter and transmitter bracket was to be removed from the front of the phone and replaced with a proper apparatus blank. The Receiver and cord were to be likewise removed. The switch-hook fulcrum pin was to be removed and a correct handset fork was to be installed. These were all provided in the NE kit.

So, this will be this year's official Christmas Greeting for the Museum!

Actually, upon closer inspection they are not the die-cut porcelain signs (that sell for $1200 or so) but something else.   Those would have read "Local & Long Distance" whereas these say "Bell System".  Maybe the Bell System did make birdhouses?

So far, so good.  Anita and I are hold up with plenty of food, drink, logs for the fire.  Much better than last year, which was a disaster.  Here's the story as Anita has documented it:

OUR CHRISTMAS 2015

We are still recovering from last Christmas. It was such compilation of disasters. Firstly, Greg arranged to have new windows installed to replace the 50s-era single pane windows, and the 2 huge living room windows and the kitchen windows reset. We had to make a 3 ft space in front of all the windows for access—not a small job; and take down living room curtains.

While moving the furniture, Greg accidentally knocked his computer off his desk and damaged it. He took it in for repairs, which entailed a week without his computer. He suffered huge withdrawal symptoms, assuaged by using my computer. The computer still had problems after the "fix", and he had to take it back a couple more times, but still had problems.  He decided not to throw good money after bad and gave up on it and bought a new computer.

Our telephone landlines went out—no dial tone. Century link told us we could have service by Jan 12, in two weeks. How kind!

We got limited telephone service after Greg called the phone company multiple times and tried a variety of fix suggestions he found on-line. Then we got one short ring and woe betide us if we didn't get there in time.

We set out to buy a Christmas tree on Dec 20th. Three places we went to were sold out. The last place told us that Costco had bought out tree farm inventories leaving limited numbers for smaller retailers and customers like us.

We were both pretty tired and grumpy by the time we found a place with a few trees left. We wanted a small 3 ft tree but the smallest one they had was 5 ft. We bought it.

When Greg went to bring the truck around to the loading area, he noticed the dash light on that said a door was open.  He tried opening and shutting the passenger door several times, but it still wouldn't shut completely.  He gave up and drove around to the loading area.  When he got out to check the passenger door, he discovered the reason it wouldn't shut - his cell phone, which had slid off the seat and into the door jam and was crushed. Now our only reliable phone was my very basic flip cell phone that I usually keep turned off.

But wait, there's more!

The next excitement happened at 11:30 pm Christmas eve. The toilets and the bathtub blocked up. After trying the usual chemical drain openers to no avail, Greg found a few emergency plumbing services, and called them at midnight. The first place said they couldn't come until between 9 and 12 Christmas day. Greg tried another service and they said they could be with us in about 2 hrs. We found out the plumber, Tim, had to come all the way from Tacoma.

When Tim arrived, he couldn't find an access to the pipes from outside so he had to reach the blockage from the bathroom by taking off the toilet (in our newly remodeled bathroom). He started cleaning the pipe with his large noisy grinding machine then the machine broke. Tim said he would have to get a new machine from the main office in Auburn and he would be back in 2 ½ hrs—about 6:30 am. Greg and I went to bed for a nap. After using the new machine for 20 min or so, Tim said the pipe was so clogged with tree roots, the machine couldn't clear it. The fix entailed digging a trench in the backyard and replacing several feet of pipe. Three thousand dollars later, we had a clear-out access to our sewer line pipe in the backyard and were once again able to flush the toilet with confidence. Even then, it was only a temporary fix.  It was a few more weeks before a permanent fix was done, inspected, and the pit filled in.

So, this Christmas we are hunkering down with spirited refreshments, a fire, and no commitments.

Santa stopped by the garage tonight on his way back to the North Pole. He needed to use the phone and wanted to say Merry Christmas to all the Classic Rotary Phone Forum members. Santa showed me some buffing techniques, he said he had been doing this over the summer months. My dog Midnight even enjoyed a treat from Santa. He really enjoyed looking at my phone collection and then in a flash the door closed and he was gone, all I heard was a HO HO HO.

This may seem early but it is only 12 days until the CP Rail Holiday Train begins its 2017 journey from the east side of the continent  to Terry's back yard, a month's long journey on both routes.

They must have two trains since the Canadian stops mirror the US stops. 12/3 where I live so it you are on or near the route, it is quite the thing to see in person.

Oh wow, it's that time of year again ALREADY! I'm not ready....

Having Two trains must be new for this year. I think they just had the one that did some time in the US before heading west but this year it looks like a much longer route through the US so I guess they have decorated a second train now.

<edit> checking CP Rail on Wikipedia, it mentions that there are two Holiday Trains but doesn't indicate whether this is fairly new or not. Added the third picture below which is the Wiki section referencing the Holiday Train. <end if edit>

The CP Rail Holiday train certainly does finish up in my back yard. We are right between the Port Moody and Port Coquitlam stations, the final two stops. Port Moody was the original west coast destination of the Canadian Pacific Railway as there is a long inlet (Burrard Inlet - second picture below) of the Pacific Ocean running east (inland) past downtown Vancouver, Burnaby all the way to Port Moody so this was the original Western terminus. But, the next year they added another 20 miles of track to service the newly established city of Vancouver.

From Christmas 2015, (back a couple of pages in this topic) the Holiday Train crossing the Lethbridge (Alberta) High Level Bridge in fog.

Merry Christmas to all of you!

A picture with no visible phones, here is the Scandinavian way of celebrating:
This evening at 5PM the Christmas officially starts, and most families starts on a loooooong dinner with traditional food, and the children just waits for the evening, and opening of gifts.  Sometimes santa comes with the gifts, sometimes he has been there all-ready and put them under the tree.    ;D

Merry Christmas

PS We are so lucky to be able to go in to the woods and find our tree there, as tradition is. Not a tight farmed tree, just a wild one.

Beautiful tree, dsk. I wish we had trees like that in NC. All the ones for sale are exactly as you describe, tight and sheared and some idealized version of a tree. I prefer the natural look tree like you have and it's the same kind I remember from childhood, before Christmas tree farms took over and ruined the trees. It would be less work for them, but they just don't see it that way.

I like your candle lights too. I have one or two sets of Philips candle lights--not enough for a whole tree.

And as 19and41 said about GA, it's pretty soggy outside here in NC too, but not too bad. I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas to all! :D

This is the most uneventful Christmas I have ever been a part of. There has been lots of remodeling going on in our house, mostly in the kitchen and dining room, leaving us to store everything from those rooms in the living room. There is absolutely no room for setting up any Christmas decorations or activities in the house, so it feels like mid-January to me. Nonetheless, it's celebrating a very special birth, so it doesn't matter how festive I feel. Plus, the remodeling is a major present that just can't be enjoyed this second! :)

Since I'm going through sort of an AE phase right now, I think Terry needs to post some more Christmas pictures of phones from his collection this year! ;)

dsk,

Not only is that Wisconsin, but my wife and I just spent the weekend on the west side of the thumb. The sunset below was taken on Christmas eve while standing on the west shoreline of the thumb and looking west-southwest. The point is about half way to the north pole  (45N) so the sun is quite low this time of the year. The wind that day was from the west at about 20 mph and the temperature was -7° C (wind chill felt like 40 below).

The other picture is an art gallery barn during the summer and closed winters due to lack of tourists and the frozen water (I also attached a Google Maps image to show what it does look like in summer - the winter image was taken about where the red dot is on the summer picture).

Not your typical Christmas images but I do enjoy taking winter scenes and these two Christmas weekend shots turned out okay.

Merry Christmas!

This is my first year on this forum and the community is just amazing, I have found so many great people, help & resources that other places on the Net don't have!

You guys really bring out my enthusiasm for Vintage Telephones, Thank you so much!

Merry Christmas!  My daughter is an avid reader, and she likes some vintage stuff too....  She had the December, 1960 Reader's Digest handy, and I borrowed it to thumb through...  Lots of holiday-related ads, including this one from Ma Bell.  A good message here to reach out to someone this year that perhaps you haven't heard from in a while.....
