I wonder why Bell Labs was trying to tackle the 'bulge' in the dial? Wouldn't it have been easier (and less hideous) to have just widened the gooseneck below the receiver?

I would guess that the whole handset with a standard diameter dial was quite a wide and unwieldy piece of equipment to hold when in use, so they slimmed is down somewhat to something more acceptable to the average hand size... :)

But why isn't the feedback number for the buyer 1193 for this one?

1192 is the number of feedbacks left by sellers or buyers, and not the number of purchases/sales. So it will increase to 1193 or 1194 only if and when feedback is left for 5***9.

Duhhh! I knew that. My error. Just forgot in the morning rush. The same number thing caught my eye and I jumped to the wrong conclusion. Won't make that mistake again. Thanks for the memory reset. I feel a little stupid right now knowing I blew that. Need new memory card upstairs, I guess.
