Title: Auction (140 Cancelled: Did not exceed reserve) - Gray Payphone - Ended 10/12/14
Post by: TelePlay on October 05, 2014, 09:30:55 PM
New forum members are very welcome and encouraged to take a guess. After all, there are no wrong guesses, just one lucky one. No one knows the winning bid on any auction until it ends. However, it is important to get your guess in before someone else grabs your guess.

Listed about two hours ago in a 7 day auction with a reserve is this interesting Gray rotary two piece payphone. The phone was listed at $0.99 and since listed is up to $49.99 with 2 bidders offering 2 bids. This phone seems to be complete including top card holder, totalizer, coin box and keys. And, through the photos, there seems to be an interesting array of parts within this phone.

So, with that said, once again, who knows best what this phone will sell for when the bidding ends?

As with recent reserve auctions, the right is hereby reserved to cancel this auction completely with no winner if the auction bids DO NOT exceed the reserve, whatever that might be, when the eBay auction ends.

The seller listed it as an "RARE OLD GRAY ROTARY PAY PHONE 3 SLOT" with the item condition as " - - - " and " - - - " with the auction listing description as "HERE IS A RARE OLD THREE SLOT ROTARY PAY PHONE BY THE GRAY MANUFACTURING COMPANY, HARTFORD CONN., U.S.A | | EXCELLENT CONDITION WIRED FOR HOUSE PLUG, NOT WORKING, CAN HEAR A BUSY SIGNAL | | DIAL SPRING BACK IS WEAK AND STICKS SOMETIMES | | HAVE KEYS FOR PHONE BOX AND PHONE HAS PICTURED | | SOLD AS IS "

NOTE: we will use a 3% gap rule between guesses to prevent crowding. As such, guess gaps of 6+% can be split. I'll help with these as the auction goes forward and guesses are entered.

It's another chance to move up a rung or to get onto the CRPF -> Contest Standings <- (http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=4198.0) list,

. . . for as twocvbloke said,   ---> "You gotta be in it to win it !!!" ;D "

I don't know, It looks funny to me. I didn't know AE made two pieces. It looks like its got a newer AE coin channel. There also no dial shroud.

Yep, I thought it was a unique phone, being that it is a manual 440 set.

Yeah, I thought it looked like a Phoneco "creation", with the cheap looking internals and obviously new looking exterior.

On another note, nice avatar, Ben! ;D

The consensus is to let the contest go forward and rather than be critical of it, the phone, discuss it as to what it is and why it has value to now 8 high feedback buyers who have pushed the price up to $202 in 6 hours of it being listed. Maybe the parts are worth more than the whole? Or some other reason. It is being sold by somebody who is shipping it from California and who took the photos of the phone in March of 2006, a long way from Galesville, Wisconsin and over 8 years ago.

So, what is it and what's it worth? Let the educational discussion begin, and guesses, flow . . .

Here's the 3% "no crowding" gap spreadsheet for this contest with 8 guesses.

Available guesses or guess ranges are shown in GREEN within the small black bordered box.

If anyone cares, other than players in the contest, this "phone" is up to $465 by way of 18 bids from 7 bidders, and the reserve has not yet been met.

I usually take the last guess but on this contest, I'm talking a pass. It's moved up slowly to $480 with 20 hours to go and the reserve has not yet been met. Most guesses right now seem to be way high and who knows how high the reserve has been set. I would have thought $450 would have met the reserve, but what do I know? It may not sell, but what do I know? So, the guesses are set and we will know what happened in 20 hours. Good luck to all who played.

Well, it didn't reach the reserve so the contest is hereby cancelled with no winner but a big thanks to all who played.

The phone started at $0.99 and rose steadily the first 4 or 5 days of the auction but then sat at $465 for a few days, jumped to $480 on the last day and then increased to $500 (by way of a buyer with 0 feedback) about 20 minutes before the auction ended. The auction saw no last second snipes so ended at $500 and it did not meet or exceed the reserve price set by the seller. While we don't have a contest winner, we do have the market value on that phone.

Thanks again for playing.

Now that the auction is over, this would be a good place to discuss this phone and the auction.
