Hi,
I can't find any info about this meter, I'm wondering if anyone here knows. It came from a Downtown Chicago building. It weighs a lot, maybe 75 pounds.
I was thinking someone here would know.
Thanks
Mo

It is nice, but it is not a display case,  it is a glazed, glass sealed (not hermitically, but close to it) enclosure so no dirt, dust or moisture gets in to the "inner workings" of it. It is original to the meter and was installed like this. I thought it was a display myself.
Thanks

Since it is GE it was made after the Merger of Thompson-Houston and Edison General Electric which merged in the early-mid 1890s

Possibly a Type CS or similar switchboard* meter circa 1910/1930.

Large amperage, perhaps used for DC elevator service.

Only a guess at this point!

Possibly of considerable value.

Yes, it's mine.

Here comes a new strain? METERITIS!

OK, I just downloaded the photo so I could enlarge the nameplate.

It is a CS-type meter and if I am reading it correctly, it is rated at 1200 amperes@ 215 volts.

I am unable to clearly read the other numbers.

The above seems to support my earlier suppositions.

Over a year ago, a Thomson Recording Wattmeter sold on eBay for $973.00.
With the provenance included, yours may sell for even more.

Thomson Type CS DC Switchboard meter
1904 to 1930's

With the introduction of the C series DC meters, the CS was included as the low- to medium-capacity (up to 1500 amps) switchboard model. This meter uses two oppositely wound armatures and field coils, and the disk and brake magnets are enclosed inside an iron case to protect the meter against effects from stray fields coming from the DC busses that fed the meter.
