Dennis, our main library has for many years contained a historical "California Room" that is open limited hours.  They have most of the reverse directories for the area dating back to the mid 1920's. 

If the Chicago library system has something similar, that would be a good place to check, or maybe a librarian can re-direct you to a potential source.  Who knows?  Maybe the lobby of the apartment building has a little display of hotel memorabilia.
