I picked up a couple of Nortel phones at a sale for a few dollars, they still had the plastic covers over them!

Problem is, they don't work when hooked to the line.

Do they need some sort of special nortel thingamabob to work?

Those are digital phones that work with NT PBXs.

Yes, a Nortel Meridian PBX (Meridian 1, or SL1, which is big)... :)
