I decided to try to build my own 685 subset. Does this look close enough to work? No I haven't started on the wiring yet.

Thanks,

Very interesting! I've thought about doing that with an extra 500 body I have, perhaps building a wood enclosure for it. It would be great to find something pre-made that could be easily modified to be the enclosure. I'm no expert on building subsets though, just figure if you transfer the parts over and wire it correctly it should work. Don't know anything about payphones.

Nice job! that shud work fine.
The only thing about metal enclosures, is potential for component to frame shorts.
if that is avoided, everything is fine.
It may even offer a slight shield for the set.
Boxes of various sizes, metal and plastic are readily available from electronics suppliers.
I am surprised folks have not already been usin them.
They are called...ready?, Project boxes.
A few spacers, some machine bolts, and yer gud ta go. ;)

Nice work. That should be fine as a subset. I have used 500 parts internally in payphones. Also I have seen wooden covers made for a 500 base on eBay from time to time.
