Ralph,

The squeaking may be from the other gear ring scraping against the inside of the frame.  On the one which I have running, I cleaned the inside of the frame well and then smeared a very small amount of lithium grease on the inner diameter.  The glass seems to turn fairly smoothly now, and the clock barely emits a sound, while it keeps perfect time.  I think that what typically happened with these clocks was that dirt and dust settled inside the bottom of the frame and caused friction between the frame and ring to build up, which put more stress on the motor and gears and led to gear teeth being damaged, as well as the motor becoming hot.
