Why do they put dust shields on the back of dials?

Speaking of dust covers on WE dials.....

Today, I happened to clean and lube a 1953 7A dial, and when I was all done, I was amazed at how smooth and quiet it was.  When I put the plastic dust cover back on, it once again had that WE coffee grinder sound to it.  Apparently those dust covers have just the right resonance to make the WE dials sound the way they do.  I had not thought about that before.  I always complained about how noisy the WE dials sound as compared to the AE dials.  I have yet to se an AE dial with a dust cover.  Maybe that's why.....

Which dials are they that have the covers? My 5302's #6 dial has one, but my 302's #5H does not. I actually like the sound of the #6 better. That 302, though, was just too clean inside to need it.

#2-4-5 dials didnt have covers #6-7-8-9 did . The #6 is my favorite dial its quieter to me.

Same here. The dials on my Dawn and Exeter are too quiet. Their single-gong ringers don't do much for me either. But I digress.
