  The linked blog post starts with Bell Labs in 1928 and continues through ARPANET, Compuserv, asterisk, etc.

  It's obviously designed to drive traffic to their site to sell services, but is an interesting quick summary.  There's some discussion on the TCI List about potential inaccuracies, so read it carefully.
