I have a WE 191G back with a we 233G top, and want to wire a WE 684A subset to it. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Dave

Hello

If you indeed have a complete, untouched, unmodified, as removed from service 191G back and bottom with all original parts intact you don't need a subset.

If you have a bottom with a back casting stamped 191G in orange ink without original 191G parts, you just have a payphone bottom. Makes no difference what numbers are stamped on it.

A 191G was a self contained payphone. Didn't need external 'talk' parts. Using the top from a 233G on a complete original 191G bottom and back only requires moving 2 connections at the saw tooth contacts (lower left corner) of the top.

Pictures of what you actually have would be helpful.

Here are some pics. I bought this from ebay for $160. Someone wired a very small ringer in the coin box that works, but with the vault door on you can barely hear it, so that's why I wanted to wire up the 684A I had laying around. I tried wiring it using the red and green wires used from the small ringer but could not get it to ring.

Thanks, Dave

EDIT: The large, blank area above contains external links to 5 images on Photobucket. The Firefox Addon work around no longer works, can not get to the images to download them and attach them to this topic for posterity.

Your payphone has been around the block a few times. Originally it was a 191G.  Unfortunately it was rebuilt as a 233G at some time in its history.  The 101 induction coil and capacitor were pulled out along with the double coil coin relay and its hopper. The 191 top was replaced with a 233 top.
I'm surprised that the 191G stamping wasn't covered with black paint and the phone re-stamped 233G. Must have been the last phone coming down the line before quitting time.

Anyway, at that point the payphone would have been installed with a 685 subset. The 685 had a ringer and a 425 network. Electrically identical to a 500 deskset.

After it was taken out of service your payphone apparently found its way to one of many companies that converted 3-slot payphones for home use. The Long Island Telephone Company is an example of one of these companies. The conversion for home use meant that the payphone was destroyed. The poor payphone was wired in the fastest, cheapest and electrically worst way as a simple extension phone.

If you are happy with the way the phone works and sounds I'd leave it alone. Unless you want to invest a lot of time and money making it perfect.  If you just want the 684 subset to ring, put a modular line cord on it and plug it into the phone line directly. No need to wire it to the payphone. There are plenty of diagrams on the Internet showing where the tip and ring connect to a 684 subset.

That payphone is easily worth $160. You did well.

Looks like you even got a 10 cent rebate.  :)

Stan, I don't want to spend a lot of money on it, just work like a regular phone.

Thanks, Dave

Holy Cow! I went to PhotoBucket to try and find the pictures. There was so many ads popping up I could not even get to a search! I won't be going there again!
