i have the same bell. your cow gong needs to be rotated 90 degrees. mine was on wrong when i got mine and i had a hard time figuring why it did not work properly. look inside cow gong to see where original clapper strike mark is. mine works perfectly now.

they remind me of some french and possibly czech door bells i've seen..................
