Can you check if there are shorted wires under the black block, picture #2?

I can't see any evidence of any shorted wiring - see pic

Bill - I'll clean the contacts as you suggest

Larry -  I've checked the ringer - all seems ok

After tweaking connections, and generally fiddling as advised I'm happy to report that she's dialling out perfectly now. Thanks to all of you for your suggestions and input. Brilliant stuff.
