Now here is an item I have that is of interest to me. As most of you would know, in 1999 the Maritimes telephone companies, NB Tel, New Tel, MT&T, and Island Tel merged and formed Aliant -- several years later, Aliant then became Bell-Aliant in partnership with BCE in 2006.

But it wasn't the only Aliant. This Underground Cable sign belonged to that other Aliant. I believe the company was based in Nebraska, and was formerly the Lincoln Telephone Company, and eventually became part of Altel. Perhaps someone more familiar with these three companies could confirm or correct this history.

I beleive you are correct, I have a phone Book from Lincoln NE with that Logo Also I called that 800 number and it is the Nebraska call before you dig number.  When Alltel dumped, I mean spunoff their land line business it became Windstream.
Small in size ... Smart in Style ... and it has a lighted dial.

Thanks, Rick. I had always known it wasn't our Aliant, but was interested in its history. Just one of those little interesting pieces one picks up over time.

Nice to have what I knew about it confirmed!

While on the topic of buried cable signs, here are two Maritime signs, the first from Island Tel, and the other from MT&T in Nova Scotia. Both eventually merged to become the "Canadian" Aliant and now Bell-Aliant.

I have these two mounted on a Wire and Cable display in the museum. They were bought at a local fleamarket.
