You're right the cap unscrews.  Unfortunately, it cracked and then broke into pieces while unscrewing.  Oh well, at least I have spare parts for future projects.

That's too bad, but other caps may fit or you might find a proper one.  Perhaps it can be glued with cyanacrolate. Perhaps rather than gluing it, first try putting electrical tape around the circumference to keep the pieces assembled tightly so you can diagnose the innards of the receiver.

The fact is that there's simply nothing you could have done to get it working properly or even replace it without first removing the cap.  So you might as well learn what you can about the possible problems with what's under the cap so you can decide how much effort to put into fixing the cap or finding a replacement.
