Okay, gentlemen; I found this thread: http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=16144.0
Read it and the associated threads, read your copies of the manuals (which were better than what I had), got myself educated; thanks much.  You're right; it doesn't seem to be nearly as big a deal as I'd thought it was.  I think what took me aback a bit is all the programming info in the manuals, most of which isn't really relevant to using it for a collection.
Now all I gotta do is get the equipment.  :)

One question:  This will provide enough power to ring all 16 phones on one CO line (assuming the phones are the old traditional ones with a REN of around 1), am I correct?  Seems to me that's the impression I got from the thread to which I linked.
If not, I know where I can get a ring signal booster made right in my home state of Wisconsin:  http://www.vikingelectronics.com/product-details.php?pid=219

6.0 REN per ringing group X 4 ringing groups = 24* telephones ringing per one central office line.

*That is, 24 WE 500 sets, Trimlines, Princess sets

I never programmed either of my 616s. I just set them back to factory defaults, which is good enough for what I need for exhibitions etc.

As far as I know the 616 can't ring all it's extensions at once. It splits them up into ringing groups as mentioned above. However the BT Revelation I have on my home system can apparently ring all it's extensions together if you set it that way. I'm only using 6 of them at the moment though, so I've not actually tried it.

Viking ring generators have been around a long time! I had no idea they were still making them. I have seen a lot of different older or "vintage" ones in use & for sale.

If I understand poplar1 correctly, it's a "cascading" effect; so a ring booster shouldn't be needed, if it's ringing only one group of 4 at a time.

I assume that's what's going on in Pourme's video here:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1BeBKIVEjY

Exactly. This is the default behavior of these systems, no programming necessary.
