Bought a 1C1 payphone that was "man cave" converted.

Bad thing the two 328D current sense relays were removed or damaged.

Let me know if you have spares.

Thanks.

They were used in key system line cards are they not?
I think the D series, and perhaps the G series as well.
I may be thinking of another type.

327A were used on the 400D KTU cards.

328D is a SPDT relay.  They are common on 1A 1C and 1E payphones.

I had to remove the relay as it started leaking the infamous green goo.

Do you know what that "green goo" actually is? Because mine just did the same thing.

I have the green goo in a 1C1 as well.
My guess is it is for long term environmental protection of the payphone parts.
Meaning: I think the relay will still work properly in a collector setting.

Do you think there it's anything to worry about as far as toxicity? I'm worried about PCBs, specifically.

Jack Ryan

Firstly, I don't know what the stuff is.

Secondly, I would guess it is meant to protect the mercury relay mechanically and from the environment. I have not heard of PCBs being used for that purpose and PCB oil is not green.

The 328D relay is listed in Bell's hazardous material documents because it contains 1.15 grams of mercury. There is no mention of any other hazardous material. In the telephony context, PCBs are used in some capacitors and transformers but not, to my knowledge, in telephones.

That does not mean that the "stuff" is not hazardous, it is just not one of the usual suspects. Just be cautious.

Jack

I deleted my post because it did not make sense to me.

Because there is a mercury wetted relay inside a glass container, it is shock protection.  I will have an optocoupler board for the 328D.
