This 634BA has been extensively remodeled at the WE shop--it has 302-style B1A ringer and 101A induction coil rather than the original 8A and 46.

Did you know that the BSP states that at times the I/R should remove the hinges? This would be when installing the subset where it was not possible to open the cover if the hinges were present.

I am now the proud owner.  I love these with the updated electronics. Thanks for the tip!

Yes, indeed. I have received an example of this.  Readers here may remember that I found a 554-C subset this fall which was in great original, albeit very dusty, condition. It came without the hinges.  After cleaning and examining it, it struck me that the subset was probably installed without the hinges, there was no wear from friction either on the base nor on the cover where the hinges make contact. Ditto for the threads in the screw holes.  A friend suggested immediately that this could have very well been the way the subset was installed, probably in a location that did not permit swinging the cover open while attached with hinges.

At least this one has a 101 induction coil instead of a 101A--probably 1935 or 1936.

Seems that way.... and before the 101 coil, it had a 46A or 46B coil, rather than the older #46 (without the suffix).

Would the 634A work well with a WE D1 202, or would the 684 be a better match?

Either one is OK. The metal one *looks* older on the outside. The Bakelite subset was introduced about the same time as the D-1 (1930).
