I like it, but I don't know what it is. Maybe a 2 way intercom?

I saw one of these on Ebay not too long ago.  Can't remember how much it sold for, but higher than I thought it would or should.  I have no idea what it is.

Similar but different, at least in color and base buttons . . .

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Automatic-Electric-Round-Base-Intercom-Telephone-/301711310145

Seller Description:  "This is an "AUTOMATIC ELECTRIC" small round base
Intercom (probably) telephone. Of course, it could have
just as easily been used in a "Common Battery/ Manual"
exchange.

Whatever the system, you can just imagine the secretary
answering the incoming call for the 2 VIPs and directing
the call to the proper one by pressing the Pearl push button
which would buzz on big boss's phone!

Very nice original paint with just one scrape mark on the base.

Unusual chrome mirror-like finish on the plunger plate.

Excellent early "AUTOMATIC ELECTRIC" handset with very
slight wear on the painted brass rings.

Original brown cloth handset cord with A/E paper label intact."
