Associated became General Telephone which changed their name to General Telephone and Electronics, GTE, who then merged with Bell Atlantic to become Verizon, who then sold the former GTE areas to Frontier which use to be Citizens Utilities. Got it?

I was right, it was an independent phone company in California up until the mid-20s per Wikipedia:

Partially Correct... In addition to California, Associated served a number of other states.
