I thought I had purchased a 553 judging from the poor pictures, but it turned out to  be a 653Y.  Has a nice #4 dial, OST receiver.  This model is apparently a local battery phone, and I'm guessing requires batteries to work?  Can this phone be converted to Common Battery without switching out the coil?  First time I've seen one of these as a local battery.

Yes, the 653Y and 653YD are common-battery-signaling local-battery-talking sets with an anti-sidetone circuit.
The 653Y came originally with a 113D induction coil, while the YD had the 104A coil.
The previous model version of these was the 653BB, which was discontinued.

Anything can be converted to something else with the appropriate effort and materials. But why? Adding a holder with a couple D-cells, or a cell phone charger, is a five-minute affair.
