I can't seem to find anything online about early 500 sets...  1953 to 1959 or so.

I want to know what colors were introduced in which years and what colors were discontinued in which years as well.
I know there are a few green colors..... but which ones were made in the early to mid 50's ?

If i can get a color chart showing what the colors looked like.... that would be great too.

AND... one last question.....  the  6 holes in the ear piece.... in the handset....  when did they add that extra center hole ?

thanks

but thanks very much for pointing it back out to me again

Hey THANKS !  is there anywhere I can actually see a color chart ?
What color was that green in 1951 ?

I really appreciate this info.

The numbers on the left are the color codes, not the year.
500s were all black from 1949-1953.
Here is a green 500 made in May, 1956. Note that the cords were dark gray, because vinyl green cords weren't being made yet.

If you wanted a green phone in 1951, you would have gotten a 302, not a 500.

The same green (dash 51) was still being made in 1983 by Western Electric:

Green 302 were made in plastic from 1941-1942 and 1949-1954. From about 1939-1940, the green 302s were painted metal. The color was called "gray-green" and the color code for ordering was --19.

Thanks for providing the picture of the green phones.  thats what I wanted to know.  I know about the grey cords  because I have two 500 sets in rose beige and that lovely blue that have the grey cords.   they are my favorites.... but the cheesy smell keeps me from actually using them.  lol

I had them hooked up for a while but everytime I spent more than a few minutes on the phone.... the smell would drive me nutz.  so now.... they just sit on a table and look at me.    I tried putting a sock over the handset but smell came the the sock and it was still pretty bad.

i guess its probably just as well they don't get used.... but I really enjoyed them when they were hooked up.....
till the cheesy smell drove me away. lol

anyway... thanks  for the pictures everyone.   I really appreciate it.

Have you tried putting a small amount of Vicks Vapor Rub under your nose . . .  ;)   . . . when using any of those phones?

thanks !

What we did in the lab was have a jar with the cap off on an eye level shelf at the entrance door so it would be easy to apply each time we would have to go in. Worked great. So, just have an open jar by each phone . . .   ::)

OH NO !   lol.... an open jar ?  i dare say one of the animals would get into it.  nope... that wouldn't work for me but.... definitely I will hook up at least one of these cheesy bastards and use it with the vicks on occasion.  thanks for the suggestion. this will be a good way to enjoy them again.
