It's a dial, but no phone...

Strange stand alone dial set, doesn't look quite GPO, the seller thought it was a programmer for an autodialler, I can't find it on Bob Freshwater's site, any ideas?

(PS  - it's not here yet...)

"I have been informed that this is more likely a programming dialler for an old autodialler"

Could be a dial for a GPO 713 (or similar) pendant phone, which lacks a dial (and requires a Bell 50B or 50D to work)... ???

Im thinking either a dial for the operator position of a switchboard or one to be used in conjunction with a Pendant under desk phone??

I have the under desk dial for a pendant, its in a slide drawer, this is desk mounted and appears to be demountable from a separate base, so like you have both said  maybe an exchange portable dial?

Doesn't the dial opal look a bit large for GPO, and look at the girth of the cord on it!

Will let you know more when I get my filthy little mitts on it...

Just looks to me like someone's flipped the dial card or put in a piece of blank paper, making it look larger than it is... :)

And I still think that autodialler looks like a Hoover Junior...

Looks like a dial unit for an Autodial 201 (Tape Callmaker)

http://www.britishtelephones.com/auto201.htm

The US version, Magicall, is discussed here

That will be exactly what it is Owain, thank you.

so now all you need to do is set up an ebay email alert for the Callmaker :-)

Either that or I will just leave it as a table ornament to confuse people!

2CV - I need to get one of those vacuum cleaners and insert a dial on the face, talk about table lamps....

I'm sure someone's made a standard lamp out of a vacuum cleaner... :D
