Different AE 40 Base markings; Decal, stamp ink, etc

From: RotoTech99:

I've noticed that AE 40 markings tend to vary a lot; from ink stamped patent label, or a ink one... Is there any distinction as to why some were stamp marked with the patent label, and others with a patent decal?

Did AE Canada use mainly the ink one?

I've also noticed a lot of AE 40's have the "SN" prefix followed by the 4 digit code, then A0, I wonder if these were the ones primarily issued as standard sets?

I haven't figured the codes yet, but so far have seen 4020, 4022, and 4040 after the "SN" prefix so I think there is a pattern based on feature codes in catalogs, and maybe early AE technical documents.

I just wonder if there was a way they differentiated what digit represented what feature or option?

I meant to ask why some AE 40's were marked with a patent decal, and some ink stamped with it in my earlier post. The rest of the post is worded as I had meant to word it.

Any comments or input to the post is welcome.

I believe that the detailed answer to your question that you received on the TCI list as well as the link provided by Paul Fassbender to the CRP list mentioned the insatiable efforts of Terry Biddlecomb in attempting to decode these markings.

There have been several
attempts in TCI, ATCA and the Classic Rotary Phones Forum over many years to
survey members and compile lists of observed markings on AE40 sets.
The CRPF
effort is the easiest to find:

As Steve stated, so far no patterns have emerged.
Hopefully, we'll be
persistent and eventually crack the code.

Terry Biddlecomb has long
attempted to compile such a list but as yet, no one had been able to render the
results into useful information.

Here
is a posting Terry made on the TCI list in 2009...

While there could be some application for a system
to code AE 40's and other AE phones that came before the 80's and 90's etc,
what
we really need is a way to decode the actual markings on the older AE
sets.

As you said though, no one has managed to find the information to
decode it so far, so it may never happen.

Here are a couple of minor
things that you might want to add or change to your coding system:

The
"2" in 802 refers to the type of handset cord which would have an equal
application in the older AE sets. "2" is a retractile
cord but I am not
certain what the other codes would be. Presumably "1" is a straight cord.

As for "MA" & "MB" you stated that you are using MA for earlier sets and
MB for older sets. Aren't they one and the same? Should be
earlier and later
or older and newer.

I don't have an early color chart handy but weren't
there more like 9 "old" colors rather than 7? I could be wrong.

You are
going to need at least two positions for the "Feature". As for lift handles you
need options for No Lift Handle, Butler Type
Handle and Carry Bar. As for
Chrome and Gold Matte trim finish you would also need "No trim". Your "0" for No
Trim could refer to
carry handle OR trim. Your feature "4" Extensicord should
move to the handset cord portion of the code.

As for ringer frequency, I
think that the 40's DO have either AS for Straight Line Ringeror a two digit
frequency number so why not
stick with that. IE: ringer codes would be AS,
16, 20, 25, 30, 33, 40, 42, 50, 54, 60, 66 (have I missed any?)

Dear Group:

I've looked on the
listserv before for AE40 codes without luck, So I've developed a coding system
based on the AE80 coding to
identify Type 40 colors, features, dial, and
ringer codes. I'll admit it might not be perfect, but it might give a way to
code most
AE40's

It works like this:

The full code is a 13-14
character code, broken down as follows:

"MA" represents early AE40's,
"MB" represents older AE40's
"402" represents the Type.* *A lot of AE80's I
saw had "802" after the initial prefixes, so I picked 402 to represent the Type
40.

The colors are represented by 2 digits; "00" through "07"... Black :
"00, Nile Green: "01", Royal Blue: 02, Jade Green: 03,
Maroon: 04, Mahogany:
05, Old Ivory: 06, Walnut: 07.

Features are: 0: No feature, 1: Lift
Handle, 2: Chrome Trim, 3:Gold Trim, 4: Extensicord.

Dial Codes are: B:
Dummy Blank, A: Numerals Only, C: Metro {Letters and Numerals}

Ringer
Codes are: XX: None, AS: St. Line, A+Freq. #: Freq. Ringer.
Date Code: 3 to 4
digits.

Example: MB402010-CAS-0344 MB: Older Ver.,402: Type40, 01: Nile
Green, 0: No feature, C: Metro dial, AS: St. Line ringer, 0344:
March
1940.

I can't say this will work for every older AE set, but this could
give a way to code AE40's so a collector dealer can inventory and
keep

track of their sets.

Let me know what you think...
