I spotted this a while ago but was unable to post a picture. Just found it again, an AE  with a stamp on the bottom that states it was made by Leich. I have not seen this before, has anyone else? Maybe our northern AE experts can shed some light on this for me.

Leich was owned by AE, and when things were slack at either factory, the other was pressed into action to produce the other's phones.

Many early AE 80's in this neck of the woods were made by Leich, so I'd say it's pretty common.

Yes, in the early days for AE 80's ...Leich made a lot of them. Leich was actually GTE's equipment manufacturer from November 1950 on as that is when GTE bought Leich.

AE was the Gary Group's equipment manufacturer from 1919 on until GTE bought out the Gary Group in October 1955 which also moved AE to GTE. Leich operated independently from AE until it was formerly integrated into AE in 1962.

The Gary Group owned independent Telco's throughout Canada and the USA including BC Tel whom I worked for. Once GTE bought them out these independent Telcos added a lot of customers to the GTE customer base.
