After watching this thread for some time, I am posting a rare regular member reply that may help resolve this discussion.

I took these image about a year ago to do a tutorial on how to clean a Trimline dial but never got around to it, was busy fighting member fires back then. The images were for the total disassembly of a Trimline dial including removing it from the handset itself. Only the finger wheel removal images are attached.

The first image shows how simple it is to remove the finger wheel.

1) Remove the usually black center Bell logo center cover/cap

2) Rotate the star retainer holding the finger wheel in place by about 60 degrees (a  3 star retainer) so the retainer stars are over the open parts of the finger wheel. The retainer star has round indents to keep it in place so rotating the star takes a bit of careful pressure.

3) Life off the finger wheel. The "E" clip stays in place holding the plastic star that engages the finger wheel in place and attached to the spring mechanism.

The same 3 rectangular openings in the finger wheel that allow the retainer star points to pass through are the same openings that sit on 3 raised rectangular plastics parts on the plastic piece held into place with the "E" clip keeping that plastic part in contact with the dial spring. Remove the "E" clip to remove that plastic part and clean the spring underneath.

If the "E" clip is removed and the spring tension released, it is important to wind the spring so that the plastic part holding the spring in place with the E" clip end up with the raised parts of the plastic part in such a position that the finger wheel when placed on the plastic part has the holes lining up with the number (the second image below shows a misaligned or incorrectly wound spring results). You will note that the center cap only goes on one way and if the finger wheel spring is not wound correctly, the logo on the cap will also not be correct, as well as the holes over the numbers.

Thanks John. That makes it pretty clear what is needed.

Imagine that, I never thought to rotate the washer then remove the finger wheel. Learn something new everyday.
