I was bored last night, so I wanted to try wiring up a D-1 base phone like a 500 set.
I had all the proper parts , 685A subset, D1 base, F4 handset and 6A dial.
Hardest part was to find a multi conductor cord for the subset, I used a cord intended for a Princess phone.
I wired it according to the TCI diagram and it worked well.
Conclusion:
It works well, but not quite as good as a 500.  I think the F handset with the U1 and T1 makes the difference over the standard issue F1. You can also use a dial that is simpler than a 6A or 5H as only the pulse contacts (Y-BK) and the normally closed (BB-W) are used. The sidetone is very low, but it transmits very well.

Good job.

Experimenting like that has really helped me with my understanding of phones.  More people should do it.
